Nice to revisit this classic wine. It has been a long time. This varies widely in pricing from $25 to $40 at retail. Purple in color. The nose has the classic Rutherford dust along with some cassis. Also a bit of an herbal note. On the palate, this is slightly sweet cassis fruit. it drinks easy and is ready right now. No tannins. Shorter finish. It is a fund for immediate drinking and over the next five years.
Its amazing that this wine doesn't get more buzz. Most of that is because it has been around for so long and great, that people talk about the "newer" wines on the block. Although expensive, this wine competes with lots of the "cult" wines that are three or five times the cost. Of course, this is still young and if drinking soon, a five hour decant is not a bad idea. We shared this bottle with Rob Greer over a recent lunch in Napa and then finished it up at dinner giving it a lot more time to breathe. For those on the mailing list, this is the current release. The vineyard is in a spectacular location across the street and down the hill a bit from Scarecrow. A very pretty property. The wine itself is quite young but might be the best Greer yet, and that is truly saying something. This is one of the best wines that Napa has to offer. It is made by Aaron Pott. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis, cedar, camphor and leather. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, plenty of cassis with some char. Lots of depth. Complex if still tight. Nice finish. This is drinking well now and should continue to for another ten to twelve years. It might improve a bit more as it ages. Nice on its own, this would work well with grilled meats.
