2013 Horsepower Vineyards Syrah The Tribe Vineyard, USA, Washington, Walla Walla, Wine Review

This was quite good. Not as big or expressive as expected. In fact, it drinks very Northern Rhone-ish. Purple in color. On the nose there is black raspberries, slight bacon fat, slight violets and underlying minerality. Nice texture. Layers unwind in the glass. Though still tight, there is a nice complexity with black raspberry fruit and crushed dusty rocks. Nice acidity as well. Should continue to improve for a while and be good for a couple of decades after that.

From the same people who make Cayuse in Washington state. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black olives, roasted meat, and black pepper. Very enticing. Full bodied. On the palate, this is still young with medium to firm tannins. Nice black raspberry fruit. Big, but more youthful than a fruit bomb. If served blind, I think I guess a young Cornas rather than Washington. Nice finish. I have no real experience to judge ageability of these wines, but it seems like it need another five years or so, and then should be good for ten or fifteen more.

A nice take on a Washington state Syrah. Purple in color with some ruby swirls. The nose has black cherries, cloves, black pepper and char. Medium tannins. Plenty of depth. On the palate, black cherries with underlying minerality and char. Good acidity. Long finish. This is still on the younger side but should drink well for another ten to fifteen years. A nice choice with Beef Stew.

Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is classic Washington Syrah. Black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, black pepper and earthiness. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, this is up front and tasty with black raspberry fruit, earthiness and char. Nice finish. A big wine but not as exuberant as California Syrahs. This needs a couple more years to develop until peak then should drink well for twenty. Nice on its own, this would be a nice match with Indian food.

Apparently, one of the reasons for the name is that these vineyards are tended to with the use of horses. This was tasted side by side with the Tribe. Of course, which you like better is personal taste but this seems much more backwards at this point. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, white pepper, slight bacon fat, and clean char. Medium to full bodied. Firm tannins. The palate has more boysenberry fruit with the underlying char coming thru. Another stunning Syrah from this winery! Syrahs from Washington are unique. They really show the terroir. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, burnt rubber, black olives, smoked meats and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. Great balance. On the palate, black raspberries, crushed rocks, and black pepper. Long finish. Delicious. This has a certain elegance in it not often found in new world Syrah. No harm opening now, but it should continue to mature and maybe even get better.
