2011 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese, Germany, Nahe, Wine Review

Great showing for this wine. Still youthful but drinking nicely. Medium golden in color. The nose is clean (no diesel) with minerality/wet rocks and some pineapple. On the palate, this is more about minerals but there is a bitters quality as well. And the pineapple comes through too. This is sweet but not overtly. Well balanced by the acidity. Long finish. This will go with a lot of foods and also drink well on its own. It went great with a spinach salad. It should continue to mature for the next five to ten years and be good for ten to fifteen more.

Deep golden in color, clear and bright. Gorgeous nose of minerals, wet rocks and pineapple. On the palate, this is sweet but no where near cloying. Viscous. Great acidity balances it well. The palate has slight pineapple with minerals and plenty of depth. This is mature but will continue to evolve. No signs of diesel at this point. Easily another couple of decades left. It was a great match with a beet and goat cheese dish.

One of our favorite German producers. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with peaches, wet rocks and a touch of sulfur. Viscous. Great acidity. Great balance. On the palate, sweet pineapple notes with a touch of coconut and lots of minerality. Long finish. Still showing some youth but also starting to show some complexity. Delicious. Long finish. This is great on its own and would work well with foods that work with the sweetness. It would be great with Thai food. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.

Wonderful, if still very young, showing for this wine. Golden in color with just a hint of green hues. The nose has peaches with smoke and wet rocks. Boisterous acidity. Great texture. On the palate, this is delicious. Peaches and baked peaches oppose crisp minerality and wet rocks. Plenty of depth if still tight. It unwinds in the glass. Long finish. This is very young and just starting to get expressive. It should improve over the next twenty years or so and then drink well for twenty more after that. A bit more elegant than many prior vintages. Silvery/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is tight and takes a while to open. Eventually showing lots of "wet rocks" and a decidedly concentrated, but not much fruit, nose. Its all about minerality. Viscous. Sweet not cloying on the palate. Moderate acidity. A bit of salinity and lots of minerality on the nose. Good finish. This is wine that those who don't like over-the-top wines will love. There is a lot here but with subtlety and less fruit. It should age wonderfully. Let this sit for another five to ten years and drink ov
