2010 Epoch Estate Wines Tempranillo Paderewski Vineyard, USA, California, Paso Robles, Wine Review

Inky purple in color. The nose has clay, black cherries and is young and vibrant. On the palate, there is a black olive quality that made me think Syrah (though I don't know if there is any blended in). Also black cherries with some spice. Medium tannins. This is a big wine. It is fresh, lively and delicious. In a tasting of Spanish Tempranillo's this was thrown in blind and was my favorite. Great on its own but will work with bigger foods. Easily has a decade left and probably more.

Normally, its better to let Saxum's wait ten years from vintage to really get the best but the Paderewski is a different animal. It is 34% Mourvedre, 33% Zinfandel, 13% Petite Sirah, 12% Syrah and 8% Tempranillo. Because of that it changes as it ages with the Zin showing more in its youth and fading a bit back with time. This bottle was beautiful. Purple in color. The nose is deep and intoxicating with black cherries, roasted meats, leather, black raspberries, black pepper and cherries. Usually, I like to let Saxum's age more, but this one is 45% Zinfandel, so we popped the cork. Good move. Also it has 36% Mourvedre, 12% Tempranillo and 7% Petite Sirah. Weighs in at just under 16% ABV. Inky purple in color. The nose is big with black cherries, plums, black raspberries, some earthiness and spice. On the palate, there is no heat. Juicy black cherries, and black raspberries. Some underlying char. Long finish. This is delicious but will be a tough food match. Maybe some BBQ with spicy sauce? It will be interesting to see how this ages. I suspect the Zin fades and

This is 100% Tempranillo from California's Central Coast - Paso Robles. A very interesting take. Inky purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, and is dusty with dill (American oak?). Full bodied. This is a big wine. On the palate, cherries with dust. Good acidity. Long finish. Very firm tannins. This seems like it will need time but I doubt it ever loses its "bigness". It is also delicious. For those who like this style of wine, drink over the next twenty years. Glazed Pork Tenderloin would be a good match.

This is a blend of 49% Tempranillo, 22% Grenache, 22% Graciano, and 7% Carignan from Paso Robles. Deep garnet in color with purple swirls, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, cherries and black raspberries along with spice and coffee beans. Full bodied. Nice texture. Good balance. On the palate, there is juicy fruit; black cherries and cherries along with spices. Some depth. Young. Nice finish. This could use another five years of cellaring and then drink over the next eight to twelve. Nice on its own, this will also work well with some not too spicy tacos.
