2008 Pott Wine Cabernet Sauvignon The Arsenal Greer Vineyard, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

Pop and pour, this wine is in a great place right now. Purple in color with slight ruby swirls, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with spice, cassis, earthy and some hay notes. Medium tannins. Full bodied. Complex. On the palate, cassis, and black cherries with some char. Long finish. At age 15, this seems at peak. I don't think it will improve but it should still drink well for seven to ten more years. Great on its own, this will work well at the dinner table. It went great with a pasta dish and a lentil salad.

This was the last vintage for this wine. Rob Greer now makes his own eponymous label wines which are also excellent. Purple in color. The nose is wonderful with cassis, coffee, mocha and slight floral notes. With air a bit of cedar comes out. On the palate, this has a wonderful full bodied texture. Lots of cassis with and underlying coffee grounds and earthiness. Long finish. This will still develop and may improve a bit. it is drinking very well now as well. Drinks great on its own but will work with a steak or roasted meats and veggies.

Named after the soccer team, from one of the top vineyards in Napa. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is great with cassis, slight blueberries, dust, a bit of chocolate and spice. On the palate, this drinks well with just a bit of air. Deep black raspberry fruit; it unwinds in the glass to show layers of spice, blueberries, dark chocolate and black cherries. Medium tannins. Wonderful texture. Long finish. This is a big wine, but it also has that super concentration. The flavors just keep growing and growing. Great finish. No hurry here, this has a decade or two remaining

We shared this bottle with Rob Greer over a recent lunch in Napa and then finished it up at dinner giving it a lot more time to breathe. For those on the mailing list, this is the current release. The vineyard is in a spectacular location across the street and down the hill a bit from Scarecrow. A very pretty property. In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.
