2008 Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review

it's always a treat to drink Solaia, especially with a few years on it. It is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc. At age 12, this seems to ageing a bit faster than many vintages, but that puts it in a great place now. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, cherries, chocolate and slight tarragon. On the palate, this has such wonderful balance. A bit on the voluptuous side but enough acidity to balance it off. Cassis and black cherries layered with an earthy/roasted herb quality. Complex. Nice finish. Drinking well now, it should go another ten years with no problem. It went very well with stuffed mushroom caps.

This Super Tuscan blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Garnet in color, purple at the core, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, dust, tea leaves, slight tar with just a slight volatile acidity that lifts the aromas. Full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, there are black cherries, cherries, slight sour cherries with some hay, tobacco and dusty earth notes. Great acidity. Long finish. This seems to be getting close to peak but not quite. A blend of Cabernet and Sangiovese. Bought on release and cellared by me. Ruby red in color with purple swirls. This is drinking quite well right now and at peak or just past. The nose is great with dusty cherries, some cassis, a bit of dried fruit, and crushed dry tea leaves. On the palate, this is layered and nice complex. Not a huge wine but still plenty of cherry fruit layered with earth and forest floor. Good acidity. Nice finish.

This is the second label of Sassicaia. It is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Tasted at a tasting with more Sangiovese grapes did not help this wine. Nor did the fact that this was from a not very good vintage in Tuscany and many of the others were from better vintages. Still, this wine was a favorite of some. Deep garnet in color. The nose has tart cherries, some cassis, some tobacco and green bell pepper. On the palate, the tannins are fully resolved. Good acidity. Slightly bitter cherries with some forest floor. Short finish. It is a good reason to drink wines

This is the entry level wine from this producer of Sassicaia. It is 70 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 % Sangiovese. And, from a great vintage, this wine showed very well. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has black cherries, cherries, sandalwood and light strawberries. Medium bodied. On the palate, the cherries and strawberries are there. No tannins. Bright acidity. A delicious wine but probably needs to be consumed in the first few years. It drinks great on its own but will work with lighter foods or pizza and pasta.

This Super Tuscan blend has Sangiovese, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It retails for $15 which is a fair price. The nose is dusty with cherries. This is a relatively simple wine but good and easy drinking. There is a bit of an under ripe vegetal note but not bad. Good acidity. This would work nicely with pizza or pasta or at a local Italian place.
