2006 Azienda Agricola Sant'Elena Pignolo Quantum (L’Autoctono), Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Wine Review

Pop and pour, this is drinking great. Made from the Pignolo grape. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is concentrated with black cherries, cherries, anise and tobacco. Medium bodied. Nice balanced acidity. On the palate, black cherries and cherries with slight underlying forest floor. Good finish. This is a wine made to be consumed with food. It worked well with Mushroom Gnocchi. Drink over the next five to seven years.

So, are you feeling lucky? That phrase goes thru my head every time I think about buying a natural wine. But, Radikon is one of the top producers and his Merlots have been amazing. This one is 75% Merlot and 25% Pignolo aged on its skins for 15 day and in oak for 3 years without much intervention. I just hope the kitchen sink enjoyed it as i poured it down the drain! Consumed over three days, just to punish myself. Purple in color, opaque and flat. The nose was a cross been a failed high school science experiment and the back room of a butcher shop. Friuli White Wines: Refreshing (and Sometimes Quirky)

Summer is approaching and like many wine buffs, my thoughts turn to refreshing white wines. My wife and I love to drink them on the front porch watching the sun descend after a day of work and continue with them at the dinner table. There is a wide variety of wonderful whites made all over the world. Some of the best values and best white wines in general hail from the northern regions of Italy. Some of the best of the best of those come from the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

This is a Sauvignon Blanc from the northeast corner of Italy. It is a very distinctive wine. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has a lot of white grapefruit with some grassiness. Medium bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, this is very much like one of those small cans of grapefruit juice served on airplanes. Tart. Long finish. It is enjoyable on its own but will be better with food. It worked well with a goat cheese salad. Drink now.

I tend to taste and drink a lot of wine over the course of a year. I am in a few tasting groups, sometimes the wines are consumed at various local wine store tastings and a number drunk with friends and family.

This is always a difficult wine especially for those who don't drink a lot of it. Considered an "orange" wine, this predates the hipster Sommelier's infatuation of this style of wine. At age 17, it has changed and aged by is still a fascinating wine. Beware, at any given table, most people with be less than enthralled. A blend of Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Riesling Italico (Welschriesling). Amber in color, cloudy but still bright. The nose has honey, caramel but also some citrus. There is also a bit of oxidation. Medium bodied. Nice acidity. On the palate, this is dry
