2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Auslese, Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer, Wine Review

From a 375 ML bottle bought on release. Pop and pour. Of course, 2001 was such a great vintage (one of the all time greats). This one is doing fine. Starting to show a bit of maturity but that's fine. Medium golden in color. The nose has slight diesel with wet rocks, lemon peel and slight simple syrup. On the palate, there is some diesel. A bit of sweetness but not a lot for an Auslese. Great acidity. Nice minerality. Long finish. This easily should last a couple more decades. It would be great with Thai food.

This was a bit shut down on night one, but really opened beautifully on night 2. Light to medium golden in color. The nose has nice minerality along with a bit of pineapple and an interesting slight mint note. On the palate, this is slightly viscous. There is just a hint of sweetness. Good acidity. The pineapple and minerals carry thru along with a touch of Granny Smith apples. Moderate finish. Its probably best at this point to give it a bit of air or just wait a few years on it. Drunk over two consecutive nights, this was a bit better on night 2. Deep golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has pineapple, slight honey, wet rocks and just a bare whiff of petrol. On the palate, this is sweet. Pineapple and some tropical fruits. Nice underlying minerality. Viscous texture. Lingering finish. A very nice wine. This should easily go another decade and probably two. It will work great early or late in a meal and also pair well with fruit salads.

Made from old vines (alte reben). Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with minerals/wet rocks, slight pineapple and a bit of diesel. Medium bodied. Some viscosity. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Lots of minerality with a bit of pineapple and citrus (Meyer lemon?). Good acidity. Nice finish. Showing just a hint of age, this should drink well for another ten to fifteen years (at least). Nice on its own, this will work with lighter salads; a pasta salad would work well.

In a recent tasting among friends, this was the group's top rated wine. AP #2 for those who keep track. Green/gold in color. The nose is nice with pineapple, peach and flinty. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is sweet. Sweeter than typical, but there is also nice acidity to cut through it. Lots of apricot and pineapple notes with some wet stones. Nice finish. This drinks great on its own and would work well with spicy Asian foods. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.
