2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Reserve Claret, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

This is a blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petite Verdot. This was back when Robert Foley was the winemaker and known for big wines. At age 24, however, this drinks like a beautiful right bank Bordeaux. Purple in color, opaque and slightly flat. On the nose, there is cherries, cassis, cigar box, chocolate and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. This is at or just past peak but drinking great. Complex with layers of cherries, cassis, earthiness, tobacco, chocolate and spice. Long finish. This is lovely on its own but better with food. It would work well with Roasted Duck. Drinnk over the next ten years.

This is a Napa wine made in the style of a right bank Bordeaux blend. Mostly Merlot with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Purple/ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, slight chocolate, cigar box and slight earthy funk. Full bodied. On the palate, this has light tannins. Flavors of black cherries, some spice with underlying earthiness. Good balance. Delicious. Nice finish. This is drinking well now but may still get better as it matures. Drink over the next ten to twelve years. This drinks well on its own and will work

This is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. It was given some air prior to serving and double decanted back into the bottle which seemed about right. Ruby/purple in color, opaque if a bit flat. The nose is nice with black cherries, cassis, slight cigar box and a bit of spice. The tannins are all resolved. Medium bodied. On the palate, cherries and black cherries. Some depth.

No winery is more synonymous with Napa Valley than Robert Mondavi. And while they make all sorts of wines and at all sorts of price points, this is the one that epitomizes the winery. Somehow, they straddle the line between old and new, corporate yet having a sense of place, and making a wine that is affordable and good value for the quality. The blend of this is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Verdot, 5% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. It sees 17% New French Oak. Served at a recent Intowine.com tasting, this was quite a hit.
