2000 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, France, Bordeaux, Pauillac, Wine Review

Wonderful wine. Finally worth opening after waiting all these years. Bought on release and cellared. This was open and decanted for sediment and allowed to breather for an hour or so before trying. Deep ruby in color, purple at the core, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is classic with cassis, pencil lead, tobacco and a hefty amount of earthy funk. Full bodied. On the palate, this is complex and layered but still fresh and vibrant. Cassis with underlying earthiness and a bit of coffee and mushroom. Long finish. Contemplative. This drinks great on its own and will work well with meaty stews. It went great with vegetarian chili as well. At peak now, but this should drink well for another ten to fifteen years.

This was pop and pour and it really needs a long decant but even so, it showed very well. From the heralded 2000 vintage, it seems to me that the better left bank wines are still in need of more cellaring. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. Purple in color with ruby swirls but slight browning at the edge. The nose is great with cassis, slight cigar box, cedar, some dark chocolate and spice. Full bodied. Lovely texture. This is a big wine on the palate. Nice wine. From an easy to drink vintage that may have been the last reasonably priced vintage across the board in Bordeaux. Even the best ones should be drunk sooner than later and while this is in that category, at age 16, it offered up a very nice wine. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is clean with some cassis and slight herbal note. On the palate, nice one dimensional cassis fruit. A bit shallow but still fresh. Not a lot of development here and no funk, tobacco, or other tertiary qualities but what is here is quality.

This seems to be at peak at this point. It won't get any better not discounting bottle variation. Ruby in color, slight browning at the rim. The nose has cassis, cherries, slight baking spice, slight dried craisins, On the palate, there is good acidity here. Tart cherries, cassis with underlying dry forest floor notes. Nice finish. This will work nicely with meet based dishes. Give it 30 miutes of air to blow off the bottle stink and it is good to go.

This is the second wine of Pichon Longueville. It is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis, black cherries, slight chocolate and a bit of leather. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, light tannins. Tart, black raspberry fruit. Some black cherries and a bit of chocolate. Good acidity. Nice balance. Long finish. This wine has notoriously been slow to come around. This is a very masculine but classic Bordeaux. This was decanted for sediment (not a lot) and then allowed to breathe for an hour or so, it opened nicely although the best days are still ahead for this wine. Purple in color. The nose has cassis, tobacco, some earthiness and a fair amount of oak coming thru as cedar and slight fresh cut timber. On the palate, this was tight initially. Eventually opening up to show a classic, if still on the young side of mature, Bordeaux. Cassis, black licorice, black cherries and slight earthiness.
