Wonderful showing at age 25. This is a blend of 40% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 30% Carignane. The Cooperative was founded in 1921 and there was a major shift to quality during the 1970's. The grand Cuvee is still produced today and they tout 30 year old vines, but it is unclear on the wines back in 1999. The blend varies from year to year but seems to be those three varietals. It appears this was $13 on release. The wine is garnet in color, partially opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, slight cherries, fresh tobacco and slight char. Medium bodied. No tannins. Tart acidity. On the palate, this has just a bit of complexity. Not tasting old are over the hill though. Flavors of tart black cherries with some forest floor notes. Moderate finish. This wine really needs food (and probably did back in 2001 on release). It would be a nice match with a cassoulet or a hearty bean stew. Drink now.
