1994 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône, France, Rhone, Wine Review

When I saw this being opened, I had no hope. But, it showed well. Past prime and this was never a great wine (not a good vintage), but a very enjoyable wine. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has dried raspberries but a touch of fresh with dried floral notes and spice. Medium bodied. Tannins resolved. Good acidity. On the palate, raspberry fruit with some depth and complexity. No off notes. Good finish. Way to go! Drink now if you have this, but at least give it a chance. It went well with some pasta.

Really a tremendous value. The annual production for this wine is four million bottles. To make that much wine and be so consistent and of such quality is an amazing thing. This is certainly a wine where vintage does matter and 2015 is a very good vintage. For around $15 or less, it is hard to find a better red wine. Purple in color. The nose is nice with black cherries, some black olive and a bit of black pepper. On the palate, this has nice black raspberry and black cherry fruit. Some depth. Medium bodied. Good acidity. This is a blend of 70% old Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% other allowed grapes. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. It was interesting to drink this side by side with the Gigondas. The CdP is a much bigger and more complex wine (and more expensive). The Guigal Cotes du Rhone is consistently one of the best values in wine. This is the red, but they also make white and rose. It is a blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, and 10% Mourvèdre. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is dusty, slight earthiness with black cherries and black raspberries. Medium to full bodied. Very tasty. Nice texture. This drinks easy but it also has some stuffing. On the palate, light tannins with black raspberries and black cherries. Well balanced. Nice to revisit this. Back in the day, this was our house wine ($20), but then it was awarded the Wine Spectator WOTY and overnight, the price doubled and that was that. New vintages are around $65, so it hasn't gone up a lot in 20 years since. Too bad, because while this might not be a top CdP, it is a very nice wine and this one has held up great. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, and Provencal spice. Light to medium bodied. Tannins completely integrated. On the palate, cherries with some char. Moderate finish. This is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20 % Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre. In many ways, Gigondas has been thought of as Chateauneuf du Pape's little brother and for Guigal, that is an apt comparison. Drunk side by side, this seemed lighter and easier although similar. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries and spice and a hint of anise. Medium bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, black cherries and cherry fruit with a bit of spice on the finish. Nice finish. This will work better with food that on its own. Cassoulet is a classic match.
