1999 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France, Rhone, Wine Review

Nice to revisit this. Back in the day, this was our house wine ($20), but then it was awarded the Wine Spectator WOTY and overnight, the price doubled and that was that. New vintages are around $65, so it hasn't gone up a lot in 20 years since. Too bad, because while this might not be a top CdP, it is a very nice wine and this one has held up great. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, and Provencal spice. Light to medium bodied. Tannins completely integrated. On the palate, cherries with some char. Moderate finish. Drink up if you have any. A nice wine to serve with Pizza or Meatloaf.

This is a blend of 70% old Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% other allowed grapes. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. It was interesting to drink this side by side with the Gigondas. The CdP is a much bigger and more complex wine (and more expensive). The nose has black cherries, cherries, spice, smoke and black pepper. Medium to full bodied. Good balance. On the palate, this is delicious. Open and drinking well but with depth and complexity. This producer used to be known as Font de Michelle but has re-branded using this name. It is a very traditional CdP with about 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre according to the back label. Purple in color. The nose has black cherry and spice and a bit of a liqueur note. Very nice chewy mouth feel. Black cherries, a bit floral and cherries along with some alcohol on the palate. Long finish. This should pair well with stews, charcuterie and roasts. Both 2015 and 2016 are great vintages in CdP. This one easily has a decade or more left to enjoy.

This is in a great place right now (as seem to be many of the top 2005 CdP's). Garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, slight black raspberries, char, black pepper, nutmeg and black pepper. With air some dried flowers and roasted meats. Full bodied. Complex and layered. This is a luxury cuvee for this wine who make a few different CdP's. It is a blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 20% Mourvedre. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has raspberries, black cherries, garrigue, pepper and black olives. Full Bodied. On the palate, this is drinking well now. Very concentrated notes of black cherries and black raspberries with underlying pepper and smoke. This has a long finish. It will improve over the next five to seven years but either way will drink well for the next twelve to fifteen years. Great on its own, but better with grilled

This was a very nice bottle. It was clean and must have been well stored all of these years. Ruby in color. The nose has red berries (kind of a cross between cherries and raspberries) with slight violets, roasted herbs and a bit of black pepper. On the palate, this has some depth and a bit of complexity. At or slightly past peak (perhaps) but drinking wonderfully. Cherries with roasted herbs and slight forest floor. Good acidity. Nice finish. No hurry but it won't get better and should probably be consumed in the next five to seven years though it will last longer. It will go with
