Quinta da Fonte Souto 2018 Branco

October 16th, 2020 By Michael Cervin
# Wine Recommendations, Wine Producers, Growers, & Labels, Portugal

The Symington name in Portugal is synonymous with Port. But like any family they want to branch out beyond what they are known for They have long made a red table wine (not sweet) and decided to produce a white table wine. In 2017 they purchased a 511-acre property, Fonte Souto, in southern Portugal. From this property comes this blend of 75% Arinto and 25% Verdelho, this branco (white) is full of soft lemon-lime, apricot, white peach, wildflowers, summer hay, guava, nectarine and plum. It’s framed by a nice amount of acidity, and was briefly aged in both new French and “central European oak” for seven months to keep it light, crisp and refreshing.

Portugal's Pico Wine Region: Wine Heritage in the Azores Islands

June 17th, 2009Written by Nancy Parode
The Azores, Portugal's Atlantic archipelago, are remote, to say the least. This group of islands is located about 950 miles west of Lisbon, Portugal's capital, smack in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The Azores were uninhabited when Portuguese explorers began to settle them in 1439. Today, the Azores still belong to Portugal, and the archipelago makes up one of the country's two autonomous regions.

Quinta da Fonte Souto 2018 Alicante Bouschet

Vintage:
2018
Score:
92
Grade:
A
Current Price:
$43.00USD

In France and Portugal, you’ll find Alicante Bouschet. But few other countries make it. So to find a stand-alone bottling from the Symington family (best know for their Ports), my interest was piqued. Soft tannins and mild acidity give way to blackberry, blueberry, ripe black cherry, a hint of huckleberry jam, and back notes of sage, wildflower and rose water. Unique unto itself, this is definitely a wine worth seeking out, if for no other reason than you won’t find this grape bottled very often.
