Vineyard: Gap’s Crown Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA

Region: Sonoma Coast

Background:

Neil and Lance Ellman, Founders:

We have always possessed plenty of passion and drive — it’s what has made us successful entrepreneurs. After growing their family-owned sleep products business into one of the largest independent manufacturers in the United States, we decided to launch a different sort of venture — Ellman Family Vineyards.

The stretch isn’t as far as you’d think. We spent our formative years traveling the world, sampling fine food and wine along the way. While living in California in the early 1990’s, Neil began touring the Napa Valley and quickly became enamored by the boutique wine scene. Lance quickly followed suit.

Over the years, we developed a feel for the craft and the business. The tours of exclusive Napa vineyards, numerous wine courses and seminars, and meetings with winemakers and friends in the business sealed the deal: We were ready to join the world of winemaking.

Winemaker – Chris Nelson

Chris was fortunate to find winemaking through a circuitous route. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, he relocated to the West Coast. It was there he realized his love for chemistry was perfectly suited to winemaking. He enrolled at Fresno State, completed a Master’s degree in Enology, and never looked back. Chris honed his winemaking skills while training with outstanding winemakers from Lynmar Winery in Russian River; Dry River Winery in Martinborough, New Zealand; and Araujo Wines in Calistoga. Chris heads up the Pinot noir program at Ellman Family Vineyards and continues to cultivate the excellence of this fantastic grape.

Winemaker's Tasting Notes

Still in barrel. Clone 115 has lots of chocolate, bright red fruit, raspberries, and integrated oak flavors.  Clone 667 has flavors of dark blackberries and a dark dense color. Together with the 777, we have a dynamic Pinot noir, with a whole range of fruit flavors, some perfumy flowers, and well integrated oak. Should continue to integrate with its remaining time in barrel.

Experts:

Bartholomew Broadbent, CEO of Broadbent Selections. Bartholomew was named as one of the "fifty most influential people in the wine world" by Decanter Magazine. He is also widely considered to be one of the world's foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. Learn more about Bartholomew Broadbent.

From Chardonnay to Pinot Noir: Brice Cutrer Jones Discusses the Evolution of a Winemaker

September 24th, 2007Written by Brad Prescott
Brice Cutrer Jones is virtually synonymous with California Chardonnay (Hint: Sonoma- Cutrer Chardonnay ). The logical assumption is that the topic de jour of any interview with him would be Chardonnay. However, I recently sat down with Cutrer Jones to discuss - of all things- his foray into Pinot...

Winemaker David Vergari Talks Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and....Armed Guards?

October 19th, 2007Written by Brad Prescott
Sometimes there are people you encounter in life who, the minute you meet them, you think "This guy has a story to tell and I bet he tells it well." David Vergari is that guy. A veteran winemaker, David launched his own eponymous label, Vergari Wines , in 2003. He recently sat down with IntoWine to share with us his evolution as a winemaker and, most interestingly, the stories "behind the wine". You founded the Vergari Wine Company in 2003. What inspired you to strike out on your own? It happened in two ways: gradually, then quite suddenly.

Top California Pinot Noir: Which California Wine Producers Make the Best Pinot Noir?

July 29th, 2015Written by Loren Sonkin
California has actually been making outstanding wines from the Pinot Noir grape for a long time. Sure, not long in the Burgundian sense but going back at least to the middle of the last century there were good bottles of Pinot Noir being produced in California. Not many to be sure, but there were some. Starting slowly, in the 1990’s, and then exploding when the movie Sideways came out, there are now more and more offerings of good to excellent Pinot Noir being produced in California.

Top Sonoma Pinot Noir

September 25th, 2010Written by Nancy Parode
California's Sonoma County has a near-perfect climate for growing cool-weather grapes. Fog banks that creep over the hillsides from the Pacific Ocean and relatively cloudy weather during key months (Californians call it "June Gloom") make many parts of Sonoma an ideal place to plant pinot noir and chardonnay.

Freeman Winery: A Tail of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay & Hurricane Gloria

October 12th, 2007Written by Brad Prescott
It's almost like a Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan film. A young man meets the woman of his dreams after his sailboat is chased ashore by a hurricane. Marriage and career success ensue and years later the happy couple end up running a Sonoma winery that just so happens to produce some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in all of California. Yes, Ken Freeman's life story may indeed be one of which movies are made. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Ken Freeman about his eponymous winery, Freeman Vineyard and Winery , as well as his unique path to becoming a revered wine maker.
