Background: When Affaire de Coeur Founders Susan Booth and Chris Wadden first met, while feasting on gourmet cuisine accompanied by fine wine, they discovered a shared passion for life, adventure and epicurean delights. It seems inevitable, then that they would be inspired by the thought of a wine that could enhance the enjoyment of any meal.

Susan and Chris, have achieved success in their individual professional careers – Chris as a consumer products executive, trained chef and noted wine educator – Susan as a real estate partner in a national law firm -- but wanted to embark on a venture together. Since they spent much of their time studying the interplay between food and wine (i.e., eating and drinking), they decided to make a wine that would transform a simple meal into gastronomic revelry. Affaire de Coeur Pinot Noir (2005) is the culmination of their mission.

Affaire de Coeur Pinot Noir (2005) is comprised entirely of grapes from the Amber Ridge Vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River AVA. Susan and Chris believed that by using "new world" fruit to make wine with Burgundian techniques, they could create a fruit-forward, elegant wine that would pair beautifully with a wide variety of foods. The name Affaire de Coeur embodies the love affair between the wine and food as well as the love that Susan and Chris have for life and for each other.

Since neither Susan nor Chris was an expert in winemaking, they partnered with the professionals at Crushpad to assist in producing this limited edition wine. Each of the 300 bottles of Affaire de Coeur Pinot Noir (2005) was painstakingly crafted in the traditional methods using state of the art equipment to ensure a delicious experience. Susan and Chris invite you take a sip and “let the love affair begin . . ."

Smackdown Pinot Noir: Willamette Valley -v- Russian River Valley

January 06th, 2020Written by Michael Cervin
In California the best-known Pinot Noir producing area is, by far, Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. In Oregon it’s the Willamette Valley. The Willamette has just under 16,000 acres of Pinot Noir planted. The next most planted grape here? Pinot Gris, with less than 4,000 acres, so Pinot Noir is...

California Pinot Alcohol Levels – An Inconvenient Proof?

April 13th, 2007Written by Tim Halloran
Interview with Dan Kosta Anecdotal evidence suggests the raison d’etre of Pinot Noir has been challenged, stretched, and reshaped in the past ten years. Pick up a Wine Spectator from the mid to late 90’s, and there is a lot of commonality. Dehlinger, Rochioli and Williams Selyem shared face-time with perennial star, Marcassin. Not only do those wineries make a lot of Russian River Pinot, but their alcohol levels in years of ratings dominance held consistently in the 13-14.5% range.

A moody Pinot Noir, this offers deeper expressive fruit, easy drinkability and makes for a solid food companion (I had this with pesto pasta but the suggestions are quite extensive – game, duck, salmon, hearty vegetarian, etc.). This presents black cherry, blackberry, plum, and light rhubarb with back notes of dried tealeaf, wildflowers, cola and sandalwood. The specific use of Pommard clones gives this some darker fruit elements.

This is really a classic California Pinot Noir, offering bright expressive fruit, easy drinkability and a good food companion. Black cherry, rhubarb, cherry compote, blackberry jam, dominate and there are back notes of light floral, vanilla, and cherry cream pie. This is not a difficult Pinot to grapple with, it is straightforward enjoyment that makes your day better. An array of oak was used - only 11 months in total - with a variety of new and older barrels, which allows the wine to retain its brightness and liveliness while having structure and light tannins. Enjoy now through 2026.
