Duckhorn 2018 Merlot Napa Valley

October 01st, 2021 By Michael Cervin
# Wine Recommendations, Winemaking, Merlot

Duckhorn and merlot are practically synonymous. Duckhorn has championed merlot since the 1970s and kept that drumbeat even when merlot was the ridicule of the wine industry. What Duckhorn has long excelled at is balancing fruit, oak, tannin and acidity and that is perfectly reflected in this 2018. You’ll find black cherry, blueberry, plum, boysenberry, huckleberry along with light herbal notes, vanilla, chocolate covered raspberry, and moderate tannins. Made of 82% merlot, 16% cabernet sauvignon, 1.4% cabernet franc, 0.4% petit verdot, and 0.2% malbec, it was aged 15 months in 100% French oak 40% of which was new. The grapes came from distinct regions within Napa including Carneros, Oak Knoll, Calistoga and Yountville. This is a merlot to be proud of, one to share with others and celebrate the grape itself.

ORIGIN: Napa Valley
ALCOHOL: 14.5%
PRICE: $56 (750 ml)

Best Merlot Recommendation (For the Money)

July 26th, 2009Written by IntoWine Staff
IntoWine asked a panel of wine experts for their best Merlot recommendation taking cost into consideration: Great Merlots from Napa Valley easily run $50 to $75 and higher. The best value recommendations for Merlots that I’ve rated 92 points or higher in the last couple years—the only two that can be found for under $30—are the ’09 Fields Family from Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll Distric (92+ points, averages $26) and a delicious, complex Merlot from Slovenia, the 2008 Batič (92+ points; $29). Among Merlots I’ve rated 90 to 91+ points in the last couple years, the best values are Merryvale’s Starmont (averages $24, 91 points), Frostwatch Bennett Valley ($28, 91+ points), Waterbrook Reserve Columbia Valley, Washington ($23, 90 points), Field Stone Alexander Valley ($17, 90 points), and Wildhurst Reserve Lake County ($15, 90+ points). Duckhorn 2018 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Vintage:
2018
Score:
94
Grade:
A
Current Price:
$105.00USD

I’ve long held the belief that it’s pretty hard to mess up Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain fruit. The vines there are simply exceptional. So in the very capable hands of Duckhorn, the fruit in this 2018 shines. It’s all Cabernet with 8% Merlot added. There’s a lovely elegance to this wine, a steadiness that combines all the elements, oak, fruit, wood and tannin together. Not one element outperforms the other. The soft fruit includes noticeable black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, mocha, huckleberry and the ever-present but limited vanilla and caramel.
