This is another offering from the Rare Wine Company's Historic Series. These are a great way to identify grapes and styles of Madeira for a reasonable price. This is iced tea/brown in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is great with roasted peanuts, figs and orange peel. Medium bodied. Dry as a bone. On the palate, figs, walnuts and slight oranges. Deep and complex. Long finish. This is a great way to end a meal, perhaps with some biscotti or other dry, not sweet cookie. This bottle will last forever. even after opening it will easily go for months. 19.5% abv.

The Rare Wine Co.'s Historic Madeira series is an excellent way (and affordable) to sample different styles of Madeira. This one is iced tea in color. Partially opaque and bright. The nose is great with orange peel, slight red berries, and toffee. Full bodied.

These Rare Wine Historic series of Madeira are excellent and really great values, too. Coffee color, clear and bright. The nose has burnt sugar, toffee, and orange zest. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Nutty and toffee on the palate, with a menthol note. Warming but not hot. Good acidity. Good finish. A bottle can be consumed over months once opened, so it makes for a nice late night sipper in a small glass. It can be paired with a not too sweet dessert especially a nutty one. Drink over the next 75 years. :-)

Aging Wine Part III: Case Closed

Any regular readers of this column know that my wife, Emily, is pregnant with our first child. Upon hearing this news in June, I promptly began preparing to lay down a case of wine to enjoy with my unborn son 25 years down the road. Two months ago , I wrote about the process of aging wine – how to select it, where to store it, when to drink it, and so forth. Last month I delved into the all-important question of which wines are worth aging by cataloguing five of the wine categories that made their way into the mixed case I put together. This column finishes that project by reporting on the four remaining categories of wine I’ve chosen for my son’s case. In so doing, hopefully I’ll lend some help to others who are searching for wines to put away for a special occasion.
