2019 Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG, Italy, Sicily, Wine Review

This is a 60/40 blend of Nero D'Avola and Frappato. The Nero D'avolo is from two different vineyards. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is very nice; earthy with cherries and smoke. This has a wonderful silky texture. Medium tannins. A strong backbone of acidity. Very deep with tight complexity that should unwind over the next eight to twelve years. Plenty of cherries with some black cherry fruit. Long finish. This is nice on its own but will shine with food. Pasta con le sarde would be an excellent match but it would also work well with a mushroom pizza.

This is 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Frappato from Sicily. Purple in color with ruby hues, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, black cherries, smoke and slight mint note. Medium bodied with medium tannins. Good acidity. The wine is interesting with cherries, black cherries with a dark, earthy loam note underneath. Good finish. This is drinking well but will mature a bit. It will provide good drinking for the next eight to twelve years. Although it is nice on its own, it will work better at the dinner table. Made from 100% Frappato grapes. Very pale ruby/blue in color, clear and bright. The nose has pretty cherry notes along with a bit of a floral quality and wild Thyme. Also some salinity. Light to medium bodied with light, silky tannins. Moderate acidity. On the palate, raspberries and cherries. Clean. Good finish. Drink now. This would be a lovely wine to serve at a summer party. It seems food friendly and would be one wine that would work with a plate of Spaghetti and tomato sauce.

This is made from 100% Frappato grapes. The winemaker at Planeta, Patricia Toth, has been at Planeta since 2005. This wine is a beauty. Ruby in color with some purple hues, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, salinity and wild Thyme. With air, just a hint of smoke. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Light acidity. On the palate, cherries, minerals, slight balsamic with a slight candied finish. There is some depth. This drinks nicely on its own, but would be even better with food. It would be awesome with a Vegetarian Lasagna. Drink over the next three to five years.

This is a wine made from the Frappato grape in southeastern Sicily. Donnafugata is one of the top wineries in Sicily. 13% abv. Ruby in color with some purple swirls, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, strawberries and floral notes. Light tannins. On the palate, there is depth here but it takes some air/cellaring to bring it out. Flavors of cherries and cranberries with a bit of salinity and slight underlying char. Good acidity. Long finish. It drinks well on its own, but is better with food. This would be great with an Anchovy Pizza, but also Salmon. It may

Great showing for this wine. it is made from the Nero d'Avola grape. Garnet in color, darker at the core, mostly clear and bright. The nose has black cherries, cherries, sandalwood, nutmeg, and slight dark chocolate notes. It is tight at first but opens after an hour or so. Medium bodied. Medium tannins. Nice acidity. On the palate, this is delivering right away. Black cherries, sour cherries, and ash. Complex and deep. Delicious. Long finish. At age 9, this is in a great spot and should be at or close to peak.
