2019 689 Cellars Killer Drop Red, USA, California, Wine Review

This is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Petite Sirah from various vineyards across California. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The e nose has black cherries, black raspberries and some smoke. Full bodied. Firm tannins. Nice texture. On the palate, this is ripe but short of cloying. It has a balance to it that makes it easy to drink and very tasty. Black raspberries with underlying char. Alcohol is noticeable on the finish. This probably drinks better on its own than with food but would work with a burger. Drink over the next five years.

This is a blend of 56% Grenache, 13% Petite Sirah, 10% Syrah, 9% Mataro, 7% Zinfandel and 5% Tempranillo. The bottle lists 15.7% abv but it is not noticeable on the wine. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, gravel, and black pepper. Great backbone of acidity. On the palate, though young, this is showing a nice complexity. Medium tannins. Black cherries and black raspberries with underlying char and gravel. Long finish. Delicious. This is a blend of Mourvedre, Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. This is a quite good expression of Rhone varietals from California. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, plums, black pepper and slight nutmeg. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is tasty with bright acidity. Black raspberries and black cherries with some underlying char. Black pepper note on the finish. Drinking well now, this should go another seven to ten years. Nice on its own, this will work nicely with a good (veggie) Burger. Nice value.

One of my favorite Rhone varietal producers in California. It is a blend of 61% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre, 13% Grenache and 2% Viognier. This wine gets extended barrel ageing. In my experience, the extended barrel ageing requires more patience and cellaring and this wine is very young. That said, for those who like big, ripe in your face wines, there is plenty to like now. For others, a bit of patience will be amply rewarded. Inky purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose has black raspberries, char, black pepper, violets and slight roasted meats. This is always a great value. it is a blend of 37% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 23% Mourvedre, and 3% Counoise. Tablas Creek sells vines and then sources back some of the grapes from those vineyards to make this wine. Brilliant and what a way to be a good neighbor. The eight vineyards are listed on the label (plus 4% of Tablas Creek grapes). Screw capped. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright.
