2018 Faethm / Fingers Crossed Grenache Off The Record, USA, California, California

This is a blend of 75% Grenache, 11% Mourvèdre, 11% Syrah, and 3% Roussanne. One of the best Grenache wines from California. This is concentrated and intense, but not over the top. Deep garnet in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, spice, game meats and roasted herbs. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Black cherries, some black raspberries, roasted herbs and slight beef notes. Long finish. Almost seamless texture. This is drinking well but will no doubt improve over the next couple of years. It should drink well for another ten to fifteen years. Great on its own, this will work well with Beef Stroganoff.

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we discussed the white Rhone style wines offered at the 2008 Rhone Rangers tasting event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on March 18. This month we turn to the reds, of which we tasted 50. Among those we tasted were some old favorites and some wineries or bottlings with which we were not yet familiar. This is a blend of 76% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, and 11% Syrah from the central Coast (although carries a California AVA designation). This is a very impressive full throttle, ripe California Grenache. Purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose is deep with black raspberries, black cherries, leather, floral notes, spice, leather and coffee. Full bodied. Plush texture. Great energy. On the palate, this is deep but accessible. Grenache seems to be one of the more difficult grapes to make wine with in California. So many are overdone and taste roasted while others are thin and insipid. It is a grape that gets very ripe and matching that to the California sunshine is not easy. Andremily is one winery that seems to achieve that balance. They are big wines but not roasted or hot, but full of flavor and texture. A blend of 80% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre and 6% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. There are not a lot of great producers of Grenache in California, but there are a few who excel and at the top is Manfred Krankl and his Sine Qua Non wines. At age 13, this is just hitting its stride and just outstanding. A blend of 82% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 2% Viognier and 2% Roussanne. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, roasted meats and spices. Full bodied. 15.8% abv but no heat. On the palate, black cherries with some black raspberries over a bit of char. From Magnum. This is a blend of 75% Grenache, 12.5% Syrah, 11.5% Mourvedre, and 1% Roussanne. 2011 was a difficult vintage, but a bit less so in southern California where these grapes were grown. Manfred Krankl (the owner and winemaker) did a great job here. Garnet in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright.
