2016 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Furmint Tokaji The Oddity, Hungary, WIne Review

Royal Tokaji Wine Co. was formed in 1990 with lots of international interest and partners. They made the sweet Aszu versions at first. This is 100% Furmint in a dry style (2.6% residual sugar). The wine was aged in equal amounts in stainless steel and Hungarian oak. 12.5% ABV. Light golden in color with slight silver hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice with quince, slight diesel and a bit of apricot. On the palate, this has nice minerality with some quince and a slight diesel on the palate which I found interesting. A long finish. This seems like it should be drunk in the next few years. It drank fine on its own but will work better with food. Lighter food such as seafood or chicken off the grill would work well.

This is made from the Furmint grape from a single vineyard (Barakony). Várhegy is the name of an extinct volcano that dominates the geography of the area (the name means castle hill). The wine checks in at 11.6%ABV with Residual Sugar at 2.9 g/l (just barely perceptible). Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has pronounced diesel notes along with some quince. On the palate, this is light to medium bodied. Tart quince paste notes with nice minerality. Slight smokiness. Good acidity. Long finish. This drinks well on its own but will work better with food. Lighter poult

Blue label. Always a treat to taste Tokaji, one the great historic dessert wines. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has peaches, apricots and simple syrup. Full bodied and viscous. Good acidity to counter the sweetness. The palate has orange rind, apricots, and slight minty note. Long finish with a slight bitter (orange rind) quality that works well. It went well with slightly sweet cookies. This will drink well for another twenty years.

This sec or dry wine is made from 85% Furmint, 15% Hárslevelu grapes in Hungary. The producer is organic and farms biodynamically. Medium golden in color, shimmering bright and clear. The nose is nice with quince, limes, slight apricot and a hint of animal sweat. Medium bodied. On the palate, quince, slight lime, slight apricot with an underlying slight char. Tart acidity but a barely perceptible level of sweetness that balances it nicely. Good finish. This drinks well on its own but would work better with food. Shellfish would work well. Drink over the next three to five years.

This made from Furmint grapes in Hungary. Light gold in color with slight green hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice. Clean, no diesel notes notes. Scents of lemons, limes and pears with good minerality. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has nice pear fruit with underlying minerals. Fresh and lively acidity. Long finish. It would be interesting to do a vertical to see how these age, but tasting this young was a pleasure for the clean and lively taste. Drink alone or with food. Salads or lighter seafood would work well. Drink over the next three to five years.

This is a dry wine made from mostly Furmint in Hungary. It is actually a blend of 85% Furmint, 7% Hárslevelű, 5% Yellow Muscat and 3% Kabar. Pale golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has nice peach notes with a bit of a floral quality. Medium bodied with a slightly oily texture. On the palate, the peach comes thru with a strong but balanced acidity. Some depth. Tasty. Long finish. One of those wines that seems familiar but not quite. drink over the next couple of years. At under $20, it is a nice value and a strong buy for summer sipping on its own or with lighter foods.
