This wine seemed to have a bit of trapped CO2 which blew off quickly. The nose has a fair amount of sulfur on it. It partially blows off revealing limes and slight sour apples. On the palate, there are green apples and slight vanilla notes. Nice texture as it all comes together. Good finish. This would work with a wide variety of foods. It probably needs a few years to hit maturity.
Nice to be able to try a Gruner with 14 years of age on it. It was still nice if a bit past prime but shows there is some staying power. Light gold in color. The nose has lost its fruit but there is still some minerality and a bit of fleshiness to it. On the palate, the crisp acidity is still there but again, no fruit. There is some depth and minerality. Drink up if you have any or what the heck, let it go five more and see what happens. Better with some cheeses.
This is from Austria. Screw capped. Upon pouring, this is noticeably spritzy/frothy. A friend who brought the bottles back from Austria said a bottle consumed last summer was not spritzy. It would appear that this is a separate bottling and best guess, they gave it a shot of CO2 right before bottling. There is a popular drink in Austria made from Gruner Veltliner and Selzer which is essentially a Gruner Spritzer. Perhaps, this is the wineries take on that. Tasted at the winery. Green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has a really nice minerality with a bit of white pepper and slight lime. Soft texture but still crisp. On the palate, minerals with slight asparagus notes. Lemons on the finish. Good acidity. This drinks easy and nicely right now and should probably be consumed in the next three to five years. It will work well with fried foods.
This was a clear step up from the wonderful 2020. Green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with slight peach, limes and minerals. Oily texture. Light tannins. On the palate, flavors of limes, white pepper and slight peach. Great acidity. Long finish with slight bitter note (in a good way) on the finish. This is drinking very well now and should continue to for the next six to nine years. It would be great with a green olive and onion pizza.
Alte Reben translates to Old Vines. Tasted at the winery. Yellow/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with limes and minerality. Slightly oily texture which is nice. On the palate, this is complex and deep and quite concentrated. Flavors of limes with underlying minerality. Good acidity. Long finish. This is great on its own and will be better with food. This would be great with Vietnamese Pho. Drink over the next eight to twelve years.
