2015 Dönnhoff Dellchen Riesling Großes Gewächs, Germany, Nahe, Wine Review

Donnhoff is one of the top producers of Riesling's in the world. This is a dry version from the excellent 2015 vintage. While still young, this wine was fantastic. Light golden in color with some green hues. The nose is pretty with peaches, salinity, and lots of minerals. On the palate, this is full bodied. It has a nice sturdy crispness but abundant fruit as well. Peaches with underlying minerality. Very long and rich finish. Delicious. This should drink well for another ten to twelve years. It will go with a wide variety of foods - practically anything.

Very nice showing for this admittedly young, dry Riesling from one of my favorite producers. Very light silvery/golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is intriguing with peaches, salinity, slight ginger and melon along with a nice mineral component. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is delicious and open. Crisp peaches and grapefruit with a lot of minerality. Very long finish. This improved with air and if drinking soon, a decant would help. It should drink well for the next ten years. Best German Rieslings (For the Money)

German Rieslings are, to put it bluntly, misunderstood wines. German winemakers will tell you that Riesling is their country's flagship wine and that the Riesling grape works perfectly with the cooler climates and slaty soils of German river valleys. If, however, you ask a group of non-German wine drinkers to tell you about Riesling, several of them will probably use phrases like "too sweet" and "doesn't pair well" in their descriptions. In my opinion, they are missing out on one of the world's great wines.

What a great showing for this wine. A new producer for me. Blind, I guessed Chablis due to the intense granny smith apple notes. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is full of Granny Smith (green) apples along with a crushed stone/chalky quality. On the palate, this has a great rich texture but cuts with excellent acidity. The tart green apples and crushed stones carry thru to the palate. Long finish. 2015 was a great year and this still has some more development to come although it is drinking well now. Wonderful, if still very young, showing for this wine. Golden in color with just a hint of green hues. The nose has peaches with smoke and wet rocks. Boisterous acidity. Great texture. On the palate, this is delicious. Peaches and baked peaches oppose crisp minerality and wet rocks. Plenty of depth if still tight. It unwinds in the glass. Long finish. This is very young and just starting to get expressive. It should improve over the next twenty years or so and then drink well for twenty more after that.
