2015 Bodega Maranones Vinos de Madrid 30,000 Maravedíes, Spain, Gredos, Wine Review

Brought back from a visit a couple of years ago. This is 90% Garnacha and 10 percent Morate. The wines of Gredos posit a unique take on Grenache and this is no exception. This is a great value and can be found under $20 and closer to $15 at times. Deep ruby in color. The nose has nice cherries with some salinity and a bit of minerality. Clean. On the palate, bright cherries over minerals with some salinity. Medium bodied. Some depth. Nice finish. A bit of acidity but enough. This will work with lighter foods and fowl. Great with stews. It is drinking well but probably has another five years left without worrying about it.

Rhone Valley & Spanish Rhone-style Wines Tasted at the 2008 Hospice du Rhone Events

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we reported on American Rhone-style wines we tasted at the 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008. We noted that this event was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective because, unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. While this was a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers weren’t represented, there was still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts.

Purchased at the winery back in 2017. Gredos is in the mountains just west of Madrid, Spain. It is 100% Garnacha grown at high altitude. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is interesting with black cherries, cherries, some pomegranate, but also thyme and char. Full bodied. Light to medium tannins. On the palate, this is very concentrated. Not a blowsy wine but very persistent. Black raspberries, black cherries, and cherries with underlying char and slight herbal note. Complex and deep. Long finish. Campo de Borja: Spain's "Empire of Garnacha"

I must admit, I didn't know much about Campo de Borja when I first read about the results of this year's San Francisco International Wine Competition. I was surprised to learn that Masia de Bielsa 's 2007 Garnacha won the "Best Grenache" award – quite an honor for a $12 bottle of wine from a DO with only 17 wineries.

From the mountains, just east of Madrid comes this old vine, high altitude Garnacha that is unlike any that I have tried from elsewhere in the world. It is 98% Garnacha and 2% Cariñena. The vines are 90 years old. It is very pretty in the glass. Light but intense ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has candied cherries, with underlying char and great minerality.
