2012 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium, USA, California, Napa, Wine Review

The label on this bottle (bought at auction) was very wrinkled which was quite worrisome. No need to worry, the wine was stunning. Purple in color, magenta at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is deep with cassis, coffee beans, spice and slight graphite. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, complex and deep. Notes of cassis, chocolate and coffee. Long finish. This is delicious. Great on its own, at age 11, this is starting to show a nice complexity that will work with food. Beef stroganoff would be interesting.

This is showing to be the equal of the 2007 and the best wine ever made by Thomas Rivers Brown which is no faint praise. An exceptional bottle of wine that while young now is incredible and may still improve. It will certainly evolve. One can debate if a 100 point wine can get better on a philosophical basis. Perhaps not quite as good as the amazing 2013, but a stellar wine nevertheless. Inky purple in color. The nose has cassis, blueberries, smoke and slight floral notes. On the palate, this is open and drinking well. Still, it is deep and unwinds beautifully in the glass. It really is well served with a few hours of a decant. Cassis and other dark fruits with graphite and smoke intertwined on the palate. Juicy acidity. Medium tannins. Probably about five to ten years from peak and should last a couple more decades, but wonderful now. Needs heavier food and great on its own.

My wife's favorite winery! Hard to argue with her on that. This was stunning and still young. Purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose is great with cassis, graphite, cedar, slight coffee grounds and slight floral notes. Full bodied with firm tannins. Deep and complex; it unwinds in the glass. Delicious. Wonderful texture. Cassis with char and slight oak notes. Long finish. Just fantastic but another few years of ageing will be even better. This should drink well for another fifteen to twenty years.

Wow. This wine should make old bones, but it is so good now, it is not likely to. Stunning wine that seemingly gets better and better. This bottle was consumed over 4 hours and the last glass was the best. Inky purple in color. The nose has cassis, graphite, cedar, blueberries and spice. On the palate, this has a seamless texture. Delicious. Deep and tightly layered; it explodes in the glass. Tons of cassis and blue berries layered with minerality and spice. Medium tannins. Long finish. It does need bigger or spicier food, but it is oh so good.
