2012 Giuseppe Campagnola Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Italy, Veneto, Wine Review

This is an inexpensive Amarone that is at least true to its name. So many of these are just glorified Valpolicella's it seems. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has dried cherries and black cherries with an herbal note and slight raisin. On the palate this drinks well. Dried cherries with an herbal note. Dry. Good acidity. Nice with food. Nothing amazing here but enjoyable and drinking very well for the price.

Revisited in August, 2018. This bottle seems to have faded just a bit. Could be bottle variation or it might be starting to slip. If you have multiple bottles, check in on them.

Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone: Veneto's Big Red Wine

In the winter, there is a wine from Italy that really seems to fit the mood of the day. A wine that is contemplative and warming. It comes from the Northeastern corner of Italy, in the Veneto. I am talking about Amarone. The region of the Veneto was discussed in earlier articles on Soave and Prosecco. Amarone is one of the most famous big red wines that are produced in Italy, but surprisingly enough, does not have a long and storied history.

Valpolicella: Differentiating this Veneto Red from Amarone

In the last article, I discussed Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone . While most of the feedback that I received (and I love to get some feedback) was positive, apparently, there is still some confusion on differentiating Amarone from Valpolicella. Based on the name, such confusion is understandable. Although Amarone may be the superior wine, “simple” Valpolicella, however, is a wine worthy of its own discussion and understanding.

It was nice to revisit this after 6 years of so. It really hasn't improved that much. It is a proper Amarone that is a good value and a good wine. Ruby in color. The nose has cherries, roasted herbs and raisiny. Dry. Tannins mostly resolved at this point. Good acidity. Cherries and dried cherries with some char. It won't get better but should drink well for another five years.

From a Magnum. This is a very nice wine and a crowd pleaser. Not to big and fruity but enough of everything to please everyone. It does not, however, resemble an Amarone. Basically, a Valpolicella in an Amarone bottle? Is that a problem? Only depending on price and what one is looking for. Purple in color. The nose has cherries and canned cherries with a bit of minerality. On the palate, a nice backbone of acidity. Good cherry fruit. Fresh and bright. Light tannins. Nice finish. This is food friendly and would work with a wide variety of foods. Nice finish.
