This is a blend of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso from Compagna, Italy. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big and open with black raspberries, black cherries, char/ash and a touch of spice. Full bodied. Light to medium tannins. Nice balance. On the palate, this is in a great spot. Close to peak at age 16. Complex and deep but also lush fruit and "hedonistic". Long finish. This is wonderful on its own and will work with may foods. It would go nice with Lasagna. Drink over the next five to ten years.

Aglianico del Vulture: The Basilicata Region Produces One of the Great Undiscovered Wines of Italy

All the way down at the southern end of Italy, in the arch of the boot, is the region of Basilicata. It is sparsely populated with sturdy peoples of very old traditions. The people who reside there often call their region by the ancient Roman name of Lucanta. The wine making and drinking traditions there predate Rome. One of the oldest and best wines made there is from the Aglianico grape. It is called Aglianico del Vulture. In fact, it is one of the great-undiscovered wines of Italy. This is most likely due to the isolated position of Basilicata and lack of tourism.

Taurasi: A Campania Red Wine Worth Acquiring

In the region of Campania (see related article on Lacryma Christi ) there is red wine that is worth knowing about and which merits acquisition. This wine, named Taurasi, is made from the Aglianico grape, the same grape discussed in the article on Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata. Indeed, the Aglianico grape is utilized over much of southern Italy. For reasons which will be explained below, the Aglainicos from Campania are some of the best made anywhere.

This is 100% Aglianico from Campagna in Italy. This is a grape that can be made for ageing and this bottling is the wineries top choice for having a long life. At age 9, it is showing some age but seems like it has a lot left to offer. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, smoked fruits, spice, coffee beans and minerality. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. Good acidity especially for such a ripe wine. This is a serious wine and in a great place right now. By law, Taurasi Riserva's must be aged in wood for four years prior to release. They are made from the Aglianico grape. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has plums, char, pine and spice. Firm tannins. Lush texture. This is delicious. On the palate, black raspberry fruit. Deep. Long finish. It seems to be getting close to peak but not there yet. This should improve a bit over the next five to ten years, and will drink well for fifteen to twenty after that. This is made in the "arch" of the boot in southern Italy utlizing a similar method as Amarone. The grapes are dried out on straw mats prior to being crushed, but the wine is fermented (mostly) dry. This is a big fruity and ripe wine that even at age 12, is young. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, cherries, tobacco, roasted herbs, anise and smoke. Full bodied. Dry. On the palate flavors of black raspberries, black cherries over burnt forest floor. Great texture. Complex and layered depth. Good acidity.
