2005 Château Greysac, Bordeaux, Medoc, Wine Review

This is a great example of why to buy inexpensive Bordeaux in great vintages. This was $12,50 on release. I bought a bunch and this was the last bottle (I think). it was quite enjoyable. Is it amazing and complex? No, but at age 15, it was delicious, and pleasurable. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has cherries, slight dried cherries and a bit of baking spices and tobacco. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Plenty of cherry fruit with an underlying earthiness. Some complexity. Tannins are mostly resolved. Moderate finish. This drinks fine on its own but would be better with a roast.

This has always been one of my favorite value Bordeaux wines almost always hitting above its weight class. This is no exception. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has some nice funk with black cherries, and slight green bell pepper. Medium bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, black cherries, some cherries with just a hint of bell pepper and black pepper. Nice balance. Nice finish. This needs some time and food to shine. Give it a nice decant or a few years in the cellar. Drink over the next ten. It will work well with a beef stew or cassoulet.

Another wine to turn to when looking for value in top vintages of Bordeaux. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cassis and plums and slight leather and char. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is firm tannins. A velvety texture. Lots of cassis fruit with underlying leather and slight char. Good acidity. Nice finish. This needs another five to eight years to approach maturity and should drink well for ten to fifteen after that. This will work well with grilled or roasted meats (or vegetables).

Labelled as Cru Bourgeois, half of this wine's production is typically kosher although this bottle was not so marked. A blend of 45% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Purple in color. The nose has plenty of barnyard with some cherries. On the palate, this is soft, but has a nice complexity. Plums and cherries. Light tannins. Moderate finish. This probably won't get better but should maintain this level for another ten to twelve years. It will go well with stews and casseroles.

Always a great value in Bordeaux and especially a nice option in the best years as this is ready to drink sooner than the "big boys". A blend of 45% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, cassis, tobacco and black pepper. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, cassis and cherry fruit with slight chocolate and a bit of char. Good acidity. This is one of my long time go-to wines for value in Bordeaux. And this vintage is no exception. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is dusty with cassis and a bit of clean earthiness. On the palate, this has a nice depth. Light tannins. Not a ton of complexity, but that might improve with age. In the meantime, it has nice cassis fruit with some earthiness and good acidity. Nice finish. This may improve slightly, but based on prior vintages, this should continue to drink well for another fifteen to twenty years. A nice match for chili or stew.
