2003 Clos Mimi Grenache Hommage à Henri Bonneau, California, Wine Review

A blast from the past. 100% Grenache made into a full throttle dessert wine. This spend a long time in barrel prior to bottling. 18.5% abv and NOT fortified. At age 21, this was singing. Mostly brown but with some red hues, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has raspberries, dark chocolate and a bit of spice. Full bodied. Viscous. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Deep and complex. Contemplative. This seems like its at peak but should have some time left. Really a special wine. Congrats to Tim Spear.

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we discussed the white Rhone style wines offered at the 2008 Rhone Rangers tasting event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on March 18. This month we turn to the reds, of which we tasted 50. Among those we tasted were some old favorites and some wineries or bottlings with which we were not yet familiar. We don’t pretend that we tasted a representative group of wines, because our sample was skewed to wines we have loved in the past and others about which we have heard positive comments.

Grenache seems to be one of the more difficult grapes to make wine with in California. So many are overdone and taste roasted while others are thin and insipid. It is a grape that gets very ripe and matching that to the California sunshine is not easy. Andremily is one winery that seems to achieve that balance. They are big wines but not roasted or hot, but full of flavor and texture. A blend of 80% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre and 6% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, dark chocolate and spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Great

There are not a lot of great producers of Grenache in California, but there are a few who excel and at the top is Manfred Krankl and his Sine Qua Non wines. At age 13, this is just hitting its stride and just outstanding. A blend of 82% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 2% Viognier and 2% Roussanne. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, roasted meats and spices. Full bodied. 15.8% abv but no heat. On the palate, black cherries with some black raspberries over a bit of char. This is a blend of 76% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, and 11% Syrah from the central Coast (although carries a California AVA designation). This is a very impressive full throttle, ripe California Grenache. Purple in color, opaque and shimmering bright. The nose is deep with black raspberries, black cherries, leather, floral notes, spice, leather and coffee. Full bodied. Plush texture. Great energy. On the palate, this is deep but accessible. One of the best Grenache wines made in the USA but it does have a very different profile. Served blind to a group of experienced tasters, no one guessed Grenache although there were some Syrah guesses.
