2002 Kaesler Shiraz Stonehorse, Australia, Barossa Valley, Wine Review

First these were super popular and then you couldn't give them away. The fact is, there are some excellent Australian Shiraz and many of the cellar just fine. If you liked them young, you will probably like them with some age. At age 16, this one is humming along and drinking great. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has black raspberries. char, black pepper and slight minty note. On the palate, this is still big and with nice fruit. Black raspberries. Some tannins. It unwinds in the glass to show fruit, earth and the mint carries thru. Good finish. Worked just fine with a hearty dinner.

This was a very popular wine among friends. Inky purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, roasted herbs, slight roasted meats and black pepper. On the palate, juicy black raspberry fruit. Slightly jammy. A bit sweet. "Old school" Australian Shiraz but within reason. Not over blown for the style. This will need big and/or spicy food. It also works very nice as a cocktail wine. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black raspberries, char, and coffee grounds. On the palate, lots of spices along with black raspberries and cedar. Medium tannins. Nice texture. Long finish. This is drinking young but nicely. It may still improve but should drink well for another twelve to fifteen years. Nice on its own, this would work well with grilled lamb chops.

This was purchased on release for around $15 and has been in my cellar ever since. Really impressive showing. Another wine that Robert Parker nailed! Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is expressive and very nice. Black raspberries, espresso, smoked meats and black pepper. Full bodied. Tannins are resolved. On the palate, this has a lush texture. Plenty of black raspberry fruit with some complexity. Long finish. Delicious. Drinking well at age 21, and while it probably can go another ten years, I would drink sooner than later.
