2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape, France, Rhone, Wine Review

Always one of my favorite wines from the Châteauneuf. They have a more elegant style. Deep garnet in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, garrique, licorice, and meaty notes. Full bodied. On the palate, this is complex and also delicious. Cherries, black cherries with underlying earthiness and some pepper. Long finish. This drinks well alone but really deserves a nice meal, perhaps some meaty stew. This bottle seemed at peak at age 20 but could go another five years at this level.

Rhone Valley & Spanish Rhone-style Wines Tasted at the 2008 Hospice du Rhone Events

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we reported on American Rhone-style wines we tasted at the 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008. We noted that this event was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective because, unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. While this was a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers weren’t represented, there was still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts.

This is a blend of 85% Grenache and then 5% each of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Vaccarese. At age 16 it is just about at peak and drinking beautifully. Garnet in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, raspberries, licorice, slight roasted herbs and spice. Medium to full bodied. This is the elegant side of Chateauneuf. On the palate, its about red fruits with some underlying spice, char and herbs. Complex and layered, it unwinds in the glass. Lots of energy and precision. Nice finish. Charvin is a unique Chateauneuf and not to everyone's preferences. Its a bit lighter, more red fruits and on the more elegant side of a wine not typically known for its elegance. Utilizing a high percentage of Grenache, this one is 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Vaccarèse, and 5% Syrah.

Charvin always makes a more elegant styled Chateauneuf with a larger amount of Grenache. At age 15, this is drinking quite well. Deep ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, spices, slight dried floral notes and a bit of clean earthiness. Medium bodied. Bright acidity. On the palate, cherries and black cherries with underlying spice, slight char and minerality. Depth and layers of complexity. Delicious. Great on its own, this will excel with the right food such as beef or bean stew. Fully mature, drink over the next ten years.

This performed above expectations. It is in a really great place right now. Purple in color with a thin ruby lip. The nose is classic with black cherries, cherries, black olives, garrique and slight dried flowers. This is a bit bigger than most vintages but still has that Charvin sinewy texture and energy. It is not a big wine. Nice black cherry fruit with a base of semi-clean earthiness. Great balance. Layers of depth and complexity. Long finish. Delicious.
