This bottle was an extra bottle thrown into a tasting, so it was pop and pour. In the Chateau Musar book, this wine is listed as one of Serge Hochar's favorite vintages. It did seem "fresher" than the 98 that was decanted but maybe not as layered. Both were outstanding. Purple in color, opaque and bright. There is a bit more volatile acidity on this bottle which may also be due to not decanting. Aromas of VA, black raspberries, black cherries, cigar box, slight cedar, char and slight sandalwood. Medium to full bodied. Great balance. On the palate, this is complex and deep. Flavors of black cherries, cassis, spice, and black pepper. Long finish. It is delicious and contemplative on its own but will work with hearty foods. Grilled kabobs would be classic and an excellent choice (Lamb, Beef, Bell Peppers, Onions, etc.). It should easily go another twenty years.
