1996 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut, France, Wine Review

Not much more to say about one of the greatest wines on the planet from a great vintage. This bottle was bought on release and cellared well. Light golden in color with a lot of small bubbles. The nose is concentrated with baked apples, some spice, slight lemon and a brioche/oxidized note that is classic Krug. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is still youthful. Great acidity. A bit of baked apple, spice and slight cider note. Long finish. This is still youthful and should easily go another ten to fifteen years at this level if well stored. It will pair with virtually any food. It went quite well with roasted veggies with tzatziki sauce, and later with pasta.

Wow! Its vintage Krug, but still, wow! This is still young but it is opening up now and really hitting its stride. It has a couple of decades left or more, depending how you like older Champagne. Light golden in color. A nice mousse with lots of tiny bubbles. This is a big wine. The nose has toast, slight ginger, cherries and a slight hay note. On the palate, this has a racy backbone of acidity. At the same time, a broad palate with great complexity. The Krug MV is always a stellar wine but this edition is based on 2011 which was a very difficult vintage. It also includes almost two hundred different wines going back to the 1995 vintage. Forty-two percent of the cuvée is made up of Reserve wines. This wine is stellar. It has 47 % Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay and 17% Pinot Meunier. Light pale gold in color. Lots of tiny bubbles. The nose has lemons, brioche and slight smoke. On the palate, those flavors come thru. It takes a bit of time to open though. Good acidity. With air some green apples come out. A blend of 195 wines from twelve vintages back to 1998, 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay, 11% Meunier, base vintage 2014, bottled spring 2021. Another top notch effort by arguably the best producer in Champagne. Light golden in color with a multitude of very tiny bubbles. Lovely froth. Note: Back label is pictured for this review. This wine has reviewed many times but it been a few months. Light golden in color. The nose is big and bold and excellent. Slight oxidation with clean and vibrant baked bread. Much more vibrant than some prior bottles. Also some slight ginger and a bit of apples. On the palate, this is explosive. Great balance. Gorgeous. This is their "basic" non-vintage or multi-vintage but better than most luxury cuvees. It is a blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, and 16% Meunier. Light golden in color with a steady stream of small bubbles. Nice frothy mousse. The nose has toast, yeast, slight cherries, apples and chalk. Full bodied. On the palate, this is complex and deep. Slightly tart fruit (oranges) with some chalk. Long finish. This is drinking well now, and should for the next ten to fifteen years. This will go with just about any food. It would be great with Sushi.
