1994 Graham Porto Vintage, Portugal, Douro, Wine Review

Stood the bottle up for a couple of weeks. Decanted for sediment and immediately served. Purple/black in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with chocolate covered raisins, slight raspberries and a hint of gravel. Full bodied. Lightly sweet. Complex and deep. On the palate, this is delicious. Chocolate, raspberries and slight cherries. Some heat on the long finish. This is great on its own or would be nice with a chocolate dessert. Drink over the next decade or so.

Bartholomew Broadbent The company he founded was nominated "Importer of the Year for 2005" by Wine Enthusiast . Prior to launching his own firm, he worked for a "Who's Who" list of the world's elite wine establishments with names like Harrod’s, Harvey’s Fine Wine Merchants, and Christie’s in London, the Rothbury Estate and Yalumba Winery in Australia, Hennessy and L’Academie du Vin in France, and Schenley in Canada, gracing his resumé. His work in Canada even resulted in the Canadian press labeling him the "Wayne Gretzky of Wine". He's widely considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. He's also credited for the growth of North American Port consumption during the mid 1980’s and was responsible for the re-introduction of Madeira to North America in 1989.

Graham's is one of the top Port houses and 1994 was an excellent vintage for them. Inky purple in color with some ruby swirls, opaque and bright. The nose has chocolate covered raisins with black raspberries and slight dusty notes. Full bodied. On the palate, black raspberries, milk chocolate, raisins and alcohol notes. Long finish with some alcohol showing. This is in a great place but not showing a lot of age. Complex. This should easily go another ten to twenty years. Great on its own, this will work well with chocolate desserts.

This seems to be about at peak, at least from the 375ml bottle. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with chocolate, raspberries, and slight raisins. Full bodied. Sweet. Viscous. Complex. Liquified chocolate covered raisins. Good acidity. Nice finish. This needs about 30 minutes of air to blow off bottle stink and good to go. It should easily drink well for another ten years. great on its own, this will work well with a chocolate dessert.

This wine, at age 30, is just about at peak. Beautiful wine. Inky purple, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with cherries and chocolate covered raisins. Full bodied. Sweet but not too. On the palate, chocolate covered cherries. Complex. Delicious. Long finish. Slightly noticeable alcohol. This should continue to drink well for at least another decade. Great on its own, with a cigar, this will also work well with a chocolate dessert.

This is drinking quite well. Opened (it needed a Durand) and poured. Deep ruby in color. The nose is great with black raspberries, slight coffee grounds and dark chocolate. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Chocolate covered raisins with raspberries and black raspberries. A touch of char. Full bodied. Deep and complex but most of all delicious. Slight warmth on the finish. It went quite well with a brownie. No hurry, this has at least a decade.
