Tasting Notes for Di Maio Norante Sangiovese 2008

Tasting Notes:

Dry red wine of Molise, Terra Degli Osci, winery in Campomarino, Italia. Tart black currant, licorice, cigar box, Alum powder, coriander, Date-Fig-Asphalt, charcoal grill, slight tannin background, faint spice light-weight on the palette, terrific acrid crispness in the finish. Tastes delivered way beyond price point. Inexpensive shallow well bottle says it all: drink it young, drink it often.

I would serve this wine for:

Everyday, and dinner if thou insist on drinking wine with food? Me, not so much.

Angelina (Genovese) my Sicilian bride for post work daze relaxation.

The nose on this wine reminds me of:

Black Currant licorice.

This wine would pair well with the following foods:

What have you: pasta, meat entrees, pizza e cannelloni, or simple Pasta della salsiccia del pomodoro con i carciofi.

Cheap bottle, but macci, che cosa il heck, it saves money for them to lower our price?

Italy's Molise Wine Region: Where Di Majo Norante Shines

Perhaps the most obscure wine making region in all of Italy is the region of Molise. Molise is surrounded by Abruzzo, Lazio, Campania, and Apulia. Until 1963, the region of Molise was part of the same political region as Abruzzo ( Montepulciano d’Abruzzo was discussed in a previous article). In fact, the food and traditions here are closely associated with Abruzzo. Yet, its closeness to both Apulia and Campania lend it a bit of a southern influence. The wines of Molise achieved their own independence in the 1980’s with the creation of two DOCs: Biferno (named after the largest river in Molise) and Pentro di Isernia. These hillside areas receive wonderful sunshine and are sandwiched between the Apennines Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Biferno wines can be red, white or rosé. The whites are predominantly made from the Trebbiano grape along with the Bombino in smaller proportions. The reds are a blend of mostly Montepulciano with some of the Aglianico grape. Wines from Pentro di Isernia can also be red, white or rosé. The whites are the same Trebbiano-Bombino grape blend, while the reds (and rosé’s) are usually a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese. More recently, in 1968 a DOC also called Molise was created. This DOC encompasses the region and allows for white, red, rosé and even sparkling wines.

Purple/garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, slight "tree bark", and forest floor. Medium bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, this is nice but begs for food. Flavors of cherries, some dark cherries and nice earthiness. Nice finish. A nice choice for pizza. Drink over the next few years.

This had been purchased at the winery. First time trying a sparkling Sangiovese wine. Deep salmon pink in color. It has a nice mousse with small to medium bubbles, clear and bright. The nose is nice if not expected. Green apples with slight rhubarb and strawberries. Medium bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, apples, and slight strawberry notes. Moderate finish. A pleasant wine that will work better with food than on its own. Drink now.

This is a blend of 90 Sangiovese and 10% Colorino from central Italy. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, with some cranberries and slight spice. Medium bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, plums, slight chocolate and spice. Clean. This drinks easy. Nice on its own, this is very food friendly. A nice plate of pasta would work well. Drink over the next seven to ten years. Great value.

This is a Sangiovese wine from Emilia Romagna in Italy. What an impressive Sangiovese! Deep garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, anise, tea leaves and slight ground coffee notes. Medium to full bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, this is young with some tannins. Lots of cherries, black cherries and plums with underlying forest floor/earthiness. Good finish. There is some depth but this will take a few years to unwind. While drinking well already, a few more years of cellaring would help. If not, give it plenty of air before se
