2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse, France, Burgundy, Wine Review

Vintage:
2005
Score:

Grade:
A

Great showing for this 1er Cru.  Ruby in color, clear and bright.  The nose has cherries, spice and slight sandalwood.  Medium bodied.  Light tannins.  Great texture.  On the palate, this is complex and layered.  Cherry fruit with some earthiness and spice.  Good balance.  Nice finish.  This drinks well on its own but better with food.  This would be nice with Salmon.  Drink over the next ten years.

La Follette 2019 Pinot Noir, Heintz Vineyard

Score:

Current Price:

With fruit coming from Heintz Ranch, which has been operational since 1912, this wine offers soft and delicate fruit, it does not pretend to be overt. There is noticeable, black cherry, strawberry, huckleberry, with earthy under notes and light green tea. Whereas the acidity is in check, there is a velvety quality to this, a tactile, drinking experience. 186 cases. The judicious use of oak aging allows for purity of fruit. ORIGIN: Russian River Valley, Sonoma. ALCOHOL: 13.5%.

Nice to revisit this.  It is just about at peak at age 14.  No hurry though.  Purple in color, opaque and bright.  The nose has cassis, cedar, some earthiness and a hint of graphite.  Full bodied.  Medium tannins.  On the palate, this is delicious.  Cassis with some earthiness.  Layers that unwind in the glass.  Long finish.  It worked well with a variety of Hungarian foods.

Checked in on this recently.  At age 11, it is still drinking beautifully.  It took about an hour to open and then soared.  Medium golden color, clear and bright.  The nose has the vanilla note along with lemon cream.  Full bodied.  Showing more depth and complexity although less vibrancy than in its youth.  Long finish.  Delicious.  This went great with Hungarian Mushroom Goulash.

Goldeneye 2020 Pinot Noir Gowen Creek

I have reviewed, favorably, the Pinot Noir from Gowen Creek for years. When you find a wine that offers such consistency, you stick with it. What Gowen offers is a sublime melding of fruit like black cherry, red raspberry, boysenberry, blackberry acidity, minerality and judicious use of oak. This wine has those in spades. Though the word “balance” is tossed around a lot in the wine industry, when you taste one, you know. Not only is this wine balanced, it is simply enjoyable to drink.

This is an organic Kosher wine and before you start snickering, this is also really good!  Purple in color with slight magenta hues, mostly opaque and bright.  The nose is great with boysenberries and plums.  Smooth texture.  Firm tannins.  On the palate, black cherries, plums and boysenberries with slight underlying earthiness.  Long finish with an almost minty note.  This is very tasty on its own and will work well with slow cooked meats.  Brisket, anyone?  Drink over the next five years.

This was my favorite of the Virgen lineup of wines recently tasted and seemed a step up from the 2020 Organic Malbec.  Purple in color with ruby swirls, mostly opaque and bright.  The nose has sweet black cherries, some plums, some currants and a slight earthy note.  Nice  lush mouthfeel.  Firm tannins.  Great balance and energy.  On the palate, black cherries and plums with some depth.  Long finish.  Tremendous value.  It drinks great on its own and will work well with meats and fowl off the grill (and, veggies too).  Drink over the next three to five years.

This was my favorite of the Gaia lineup tasted.  Purple in color, ruby at the edges, mostly opaque and bright.  The nose has plums, slight cherries, slighter cranberries with char.  Firm tannins.  Nice texture.  Nice balance.  On the palate, this is very concentrated.  Plums and dark cherries with some underlying char and earth.  Long finish.  Delicious wine.  Great value.  This drinks well on its own and will work well with roasted chicken or meats.  Drink over the next five to eight years.

Another great value from Domaine Bousquet made from organic grapes.  Carnet in color, purple at the core, mostly opaque and bright.  The nose has cassis, coffee and smoke.  Full bodied.  Medium tannins.  Nice balance.  On the palate, cassis, black cherries with some depth.  Fresh and energetic.  Long finish.  This drinks well on its own and would work well with a steak off the grill.  Drink over the next five years.

This is made from organic grapes in Argentina.  Ruby in color, flat, mostly opaque and bright.  The nose is nice with black cherries, black pepper and some char.  Mice mouthfeel.  Medium tannins.  On the palate, the black cherries come thru along with some plums and underlying char.  Long finish.  Overall, a very solid Cab and a terrific value.  It drinks well on its own and would be great with burgers or ribs off the grill.  Drink over the next three to five years.
