2019 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling 1ÖTW Ried Gaisberg, Austria, Kamptal, Wine Review

What a gorgeous Riesling! Pale golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is deep and concentrated with slate, apricots and slight lime zest. Medium bodied. Creamy texture. Great balance. On the palate, this is still youthful. Lots of energy and depth. Dry. Crisp minerality/slate with apricots and slight peach. Long finish. This is delicious on its own and will work with almost any foods. It would be great with fried chicken or fried mushrooms. It is drinking well now and will undoubtedly mature. Drink over the next twenty to thirty years.

A very different vintage from the generous 2019, this wine shows a lot of concentration and reflects the "premier cru" vineyard. Yellow/golden in color, clear and bright. The nose features spice, minerals but also a bit of tropical fruits/pineapple. Medium bodied. Slightly viscous in texture. On the palate, this is dry and tight, but unwinds in the glass. Lots of minerality, some pineapple, along with slight tannins. Long finish. This drinks well on its own but will work better with food. This would work well with a yellow curry dish. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has lemon-lime qualities with some minerality. On the palate, this opens quickly with bold flavors. Tart lemon candy and some underlying minerality. Good acidity. Longer finish. There is a nice vibrancy here. Drink over the next few years. It works great on its own but worked better with soft cheeses.

From a "premier cru" vineyard that has the oldest vines used by Schloss Gobelsburg. Green/yellow/gold in color, clear and bright. The wine has some heft to it, even in thinner vintages. It is fuller, "meatier" than the Gaisberg vineyard. Lots of minerals and spice, and some floral notes. Medium to full bodied. Good acidity. On the palate, slight peach, but this is more about minerality and spice. Dry. Long finish. This is delicious now, but really needs a few years to flesh out.

This is drinking well for a mature, dry Riesling. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose takes a moment then opens to show pineapple and minerals. On the palate, the pineapple carries thru along with a vegetarian tzimmes (a jewish dish that involves slow cooking root vegetables and fruits). This has a nice tartness that gives it plenty of energy. The finish is long but does have a slightly bitter note. All in all, this is enjoyable and while it improved over a couple of hours with air, I think it is getting ready to start a slow decline. Still, it should have at least five to se

A very respectable showing for a 20 year old Austrian Riesling. This was about $25 on release and over the years, I have consumed a bunch - all good as it matured. It now has a deep golden color, clear and bright. The nose has slight petrol, a bit of burnt honey and nice minerality. On the palate, slight pineapple and apricots. This is dry. Good finish. This is drinking nicely. Mature, but no hurry. It should easily go another decade though it won't improve. It will work well with cheeses or even Thai food.
