2018 Valibor Badacsonyi Budai, Hungary, Wine Review

This is a white wine from Hungary made from the obscure Budai Zöld grape. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has a (white) floral note with a bit of orange citrus. Medium bodied, slightly viscous. On the palate, this is lightly sweet with some botrytis. Notes of citrus. Good acidity. Moderate finish. A very pleasant and different wine that should be consumed soon. Nice on its own, this will work with lighter foods and would be nice with a spicy soup.

This is a very nice, light Pinot Gris from Hungary. Pale green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has lemons and slight minerality. Light bodied. On the palate, the lemon comes thru with some green apples especially on the finish. This drinks well on its own and will work with lighter foods. It worked well with Tomato & Basil Soup at Callas Cafe in Budapest. Drink over the next year or two.

One of the best wines from Hungary I have tasted. Köves is the name of the vineyard. Egri Csillag means star of Eger which comes from a legend about the lights coming from the Watchman's Huts protecting Hungary from the Turks in the 17th century. This region has long been known for its reds known as Bulls Blood but apparently a few hundred years ago, the whites were more prominent. It is an organic blend of 60% Hárslevelű, and 40% Furmint. This is a dry wine made from the Sárgamuskotály (also known as Muscat à Petits Grains) in Hungary. Consumed at the Liz & Chain sky Rooftop bar in Budapest. Slivery/green/gold in color, clear and bright. It has an interesting nose of orange, mint, tarragon and acacia flowers. Light bodied with a slight viscosity. On the palate, this has nice lime notes with slight orange peel. Moderate acidity. Long finish. A refreshing wine at the end of a hot day. It drinks well on its own and will work well with lighter foods. Fried artichokes would work well.

This is a dry wine made from mostly Furmint in Hungary. It is actually a blend of 85% Furmint, 7% Hárslevelű, 5% Yellow Muscat and 3% Kabar. Pale golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has nice peach notes with a bit of a floral quality. Medium bodied with a slightly oily texture. On the palate, the peach comes thru with a strong but balanced acidity. Some depth. Tasty. Long finish. One of those wines that seems familiar but not quite. drink over the next couple of years. At under $20, it is a nice value and a strong buy for summer sipping on its own or with lighter foods.

Made from the Juhfark grape on the Somlo hill near Lake Balaton in Hungary. Silvery green/gold in color. The nose has pears, smoke (it is grown in volcanic soil), slight soapy note and an herbal note. On the palate, this is semi-sweet with apples and honey notes. It has a tart green apple streak on the finish. This improved with air and definitely needs some food to counter the acidic bite. Drink over the next five years. It worked well with soft cheeses and will work with most lighter foods.
