Background:

Calicaro's Dave Ball: Our name "Calicaro" is a mashup of Cali and Caro and refers to the fact that we spend part of our time in California and part of our time in South Carolina. We focus on single vineyard Pinot Noir but also make small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, This year we will make small amounts of Viognier and Syrah in addition to Pinot Noir.

With our Pinot Noirs we like to reflect terroir and make Pinots from different AVAs that exhibit the recognized characteristics of these specific places.  Our Santa Lucia Highlands Pinots are big, rich and hedonistic but still balanced. The Sonoma Coast Pinots are intense but not as weighty as the SLH. Our La Encantada Pinot from Sta. Rita Hills is only lightly oaked, offering up more cool climate acidity from this true Zone I climate and is intended to be a food friendly Pinot for the table.

Common to all of our wines are low yielding vineyards with intensely flavored fruit, hand picking and sorting, and carefully controlled and monitored small lot winemaking with a real focus on quality.

Calicaro can be found at Napa Valley Winery Exchange in SF near Union Square and on the wine list at Greens.  We are also sometimes sold online through Benchmark Wine Group in Napa.  We are also in a number of the finest restaurants and wine stores in South Carolina.

I am a health care business attorney when I am not involved with Calicaro. I strive to bring the same level of professionalism and attention to detail to both winemaking and law and enjoy the way these two very different passions/professions provide counterbalance.

Experts:

Bartholomew Broadbent, CEO of Broadbent Selections. Bartholomew was named as one of the "fifty most influential people in the wine world" by Decanter Magazine. He is also widely considered to be one of the world's foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. Learn more about Bartholomew Broadbent.

October 19th, 2007Written by Brad Prescott
Sometimes there are people you encounter in life who, the minute you meet them, you think "This guy has a story to tell and I bet he tells it well." David Vergari is that guy. A veteran winemaker, David launched his own eponymous label, Vergari Wines , in 2003. He recently sat down with IntoWine to share with us his evolution as a winemaker and, most interestingly, the stories "behind the wine". You founded the Vergari Wine Company in 2003. What inspired you to strike out on your own? It happened in two ways: gradually, then quite suddenly.

From Chardonnay to Pinot Noir: Brice Cutrer Jones Discusses the Evolution of a Winemaker

September 24th, 2007Written by Brad Prescott
Brice Cutrer Jones is virtually synonymous with California Chardonnay (Hint: Sonoma- Cutrer Chardonnay ). The logical assumption is that the topic de jour of any interview with him would be Chardonnay. However, I recently sat down with Cutrer Jones to discuss - of all things- his foray into Pinot...

Top Sonoma Pinot Noir

September 25th, 2010Written by Nancy Parode
California's Sonoma County has a near-perfect climate for growing cool-weather grapes. Fog banks that creep over the hillsides from the Pacific Ocean and relatively cloudy weather during key months (Californians call it "June Gloom") make many parts of Sonoma an ideal place to plant pinot noir and chardonnay.

Tandem Wines' Greg La Follette on Terroir, Points, and Pinot Noir

October 22nd, 2007Written by Brad Prescott
Greg La Follette is one of the most revered winemakers in Sonoma County, if not the entire wine industry. His wines at both Flowers and his own label, Tandem Wines , have earned numerous accolades. In person, however, his prominence seems more like water under the bridge. Strikingly unpretentious and engaging, Greg La Follette shows far more interest in what you think about his wines today than he does about how they score or what critics say. IntoWine had the good fortune of chatting with Greg recently about winemaking, terroir, and the blessed curse of wine scoring systems.
