Dampt makes some of the best value in Chablis. With the price of the top two or three wineries going crazy, these are excellent wines that are affordable. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has great minerality/crushed shells and just a hint of lemon. Clean. On the palate, this is crisp and tasty. Crushed shells. Long finish. This is nice on its own but would be perfect with oysters or clams. Drink over the next ten to twelve years.

Chablis is the name of a village that has given its name to a region producing some of the best white wines in the world. The region of Chablis encompasses 19 towns and is about twenty by fifteen kilometers in size. In France, by law, wines are named after the place where they are fashioned and not the grape varietal. The wine producers of Chablis have spent hundreds of years determining which grapes produce the best wines for their soils and the answer: crisp, mineral-driven wines made from the Chardonnay grape.

As prices for white Burgundy in general and Chablis in particular continue to rise, it is nice to find still affordable producers making great wine. This is one such producer. the wine is made in a concrete egg and sees no oak. Light golden in color with some green hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice with crushed shells, slight chalk/minerality and lemon. Medium bodied. Lean and racy texture. Good acidity. On the palate, lemons and crushed shells. Long finish. From an excellent producer who is still affordable in Chablis. These are not what I think of as "traditional" wines, but they are quite good and certainly not "modern" if that would be the opposite of traditional. Light golden in color. The nose has some green apples more of a lemony quality. There is a slight chalkiness to it, but more spice. Good not great acidity. On the palate, this is more about lemons with some underlying spice. Nice finish. Still young, this may yet improve a bit more. In the world of Chablis, there are some exceptional producers but only a couple of those are "affordable". Sebastian Dampt is one of them and that is especially true of the 1er Crus. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has green apples, slight grapefruits, slight gunpowder and spice. Full bodied. Excellent acidity. On the palate, this is still a bit tight but opens quickly in the glass. Green apples, grapefruits and slight char. Long finish. Delicious on its own, this is even better with food. With most of my favorite Chablis producers now selling their wines for (well) north of $100 per bottle, Dampt has become one of our go to Chablis. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is slightly chalky with some minerality and slight lemon. Also some salinity. Full bodied. Crisp acidity. On the palate, lemons, chalk and minerality. Long finish. Delicious. This drinks well but better with food. Shellfish is ideal but so is Hummus and Roasted Veggies. Drink over the next seven to ten years.
