2019 Dalla Valle Maya, USA, California, Napa, Oakville, Wine Review

Surprisingly open, Maya used to be a wine that needed serious time before opening but this vintage/bottle was drinking well. It is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with cassis, blueberries, black cherries, cigar tobacco, spice, slight cocoa and char. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Black cherries, cassis, spice, tobacco and char. Lovely texture. Long finish. No doubt this gets a perfect score as it matures but its close now. Drink over the next twenty to thirty years. It is better now on its own but as it ages, this is a classis steak house wine.

This is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is lovely with cassis, cedar, black cherries, slight dried tobacco, spice and an interesting menthol note. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Cassis, black cherries, spices and graphite. Lovely texture. Long finish. This is young but drinking well. It is great on its own and would work well with roasted meats and/or root vegetables. It will still improve. Drink over the next twenty years.

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. This was pop and pour and is, of course, young and really needs time or a decant. That said, it is just an incredible wine! Inky purple in color, shimmering bright and opaque. The nose has cassis, cedar, blueberries, chocolate and slight spice. Full bodied. Lovely velvety yet sinewy texture. Medium tannins. Tasted blind with other wines including the 2013 Bard. It was close and although I think this is the better wine, I found the 2013 a bit better on the evening. It is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 5% Petite Verdot. Inky purple in color and shimmering bright. Opaque. The nose is big with cassis, graphite, slight earthiness and char. A bit tight. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is young and tight. Very ripe, this needs time. Flavors of cassis, blueberries, spice and cherries. Long finish. Still was quite tight so it was left to sit in the glass for another hour where it eventually opened up. This bottle needs time. A 24 hour decant might not be out of line at this point. This is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. This is Screaming Eagle's Merlot based wine. This year the blend is 61% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is still young and tight and took some time to open. That said, it was delicious. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, cherries, dark chocolate, violets and a bit of earthiness. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this has a lush texture. Black cherries and cherries with some chocolate and char. Great balance. Long finish.
