2015 Screaming Eagle The Flight, USA, California, Napa, Oakville, Wine Review

This is Screaming Eagle's Merlot based wine. This year the blend is 61% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is still young and tight and took some time to open. That said, it was delicious. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, cherries, dark chocolate, violets and a bit of earthiness. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this has a lush texture. Black cherries and cherries with some chocolate and char. Great balance. Long finish. This could use a few more years of cellaring (or air) but should drink well for twenty years. It needs big food right now with a lot of meat or cheese, but drinks great on its own.

This wine is now called simply The Flight to prevent any confusion from thinking this is a second wine. It normally has a more significant percentage of Merlot, but in 2012, it is actually 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. Beautiful wine. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, cassis, cherries, graphite and slight black olives. Full bodied. Silky but rich texture. Great depth and balance. A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. This was pop and pour and is, of course, young and really needs time or a decant. That said, it is just an incredible wine! Inky purple in color, shimmering bright and opaque. The nose has cassis, cedar, blueberries, chocolate and slight spice. Full bodied. Lovely velvety yet sinewy texture. Medium tannins. This is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is lovely with cassis, cedar, black cherries, slight dried tobacco, spice and an interesting menthol note. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Cassis, black cherries, spices and graphite. Lovely texture. Long finish. This is young but drinking well. It is great on its own and would work well with roasted meats and/or root vegetables. It will still improve. Drink over the next twenty years.

This is an excellent wine. A blend of 50% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Merlot with grapes from Atlas Peak and Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. Consumed over two days, this was better on Day 2. Purple in color. On day one, the nose shows black cherries, slight cedar and a clove/bitters quality to it that is very interesting. On the palate, this is not a big, bold wine. Rather, there are plenty of concentrated fruits, mostly cherries and black cherries with a slight bitterness (again in a good way) to it.
