2016 Paternoster Aglianico del Vulture Synthesi, Italy, Basilicata, Wine Review

This is the entry level wine of Paternoster, one of the top producers in the "arch of the boot". Although this is showing some age, their top bottlings are still quite young as Aglianico is a grape that ages quite well. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, wild thyme and char. Medium bodied. Good acidity. Light tannins. On the palate, this seems fully mature. Cherry and dried cherry fruit. Moderate finish. It needs some food. A great choice for mid-week Pizza. Drink up.

Aglianico del Vulture: The Basilicata Region Produces One of the Great Undiscovered Wines of Italy

All the way down at the southern end of Italy, in the arch of the boot, is the region of Basilicata. It is sparsely populated with sturdy peoples of very old traditions. The people who reside there often call their region by the ancient Roman name of Lucanta. The wine making and drinking traditions there predate Rome. One of the oldest and best wines made there is from the Aglianico grape. It is called Aglianico del Vulture. In fact, it is one of the great-undiscovered wines of Italy. This is most likely due to the isolated position of Basilicata and lack of tourism.

This is from the "arch" of the Italian boot area and made from the Aglianico grape. It is possibly the best wine from this area but it does take a long time to mature. At 19 years from vintage, this wine is now in a great place. Purple/ruby in color. The nose has black cherries, leather, cigar box, and dust. On the palate, it does show some age but plenty of fresh cherries and black cherries as well over a dry earthy, tobacco quality. Good acidity, this goes quite well with food. Nice finish. This is a very nice wine made from the Aglianico grape in southern Italy (think the arch of the foot). Aglianico can be one of the more tannic grapes. It often needs a lot of cellaring to come around but also can be quite long lived. Purple in color, slight ruby rim. This is made in the "arch" of the boot in southern Italy utlizing a similar method as Amarone. The grapes are dried out on straw mats prior to being crushed, but the wine is fermented (mostly) dry. This is a big fruity and ripe wine that even at age 12, is young. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, cherries, tobacco, roasted herbs, anise and smoke. Full bodied. Dry. On the palate flavors of black raspberries, black cherries over burnt forest floor. Great texture. Complex and layered depth. Good acidity.

Aglianico can be a diverse grape, but the ones made in Vulture (the arch of the boot), tend to be excellent values. Purple in color with a ruby rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with plums, black cherries, cocoa powder, and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, this is young but drinking well.
