The Vibe:

Large, upscale, and country club-esque. Joseph Phelps is very much geared towards servicing their club members, which they appear to do quite well. The tasting room fee is $20 which tends to keep away the casual Napa tourist.

Known For:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Not good for:
  • Group picnics
  • Event hosting such as weddings or corporate gatherings
  • People who want to bring thier kids.
  • People who want to bring their dogs.
  • People only seeking the ambiance of wine tasting such as beautiful gardens, fabulous views, or impressive architecture.  Not that Joseph Phelps lacks these things, its just that the tasting fee is $20which is a steep price to pay to enjoy the scenery.
  • Tour busses or large groups. The tasting fee is $20 so its unlikely a large group will all be on board here.
Particularly good if you are seeking:
  • A high end tasting experience from a producer with a great reputation in Napa. Keep in mind the tasting fee is pricey relative to other wineries so this is not a place for the casual wine tourist.
  • To become a member and receive "country club" style benefits where you can reserve a personal guided tour or a private tasting.
