2013 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese, Germany, Nahe, Wine Review

Vintage:

Score:

Grade:
A

This is in a nice place right now.  Light golden in color, clear and bright.  The nose is great with lemon peel, wet rocks, salinity and slight char.  Medium bodied.  Vibrant acidity.  On the palate, this is sweet, not cloying.  Delicious.  Flavors of lemon, slight apples and minerality.  Long finish.  This is just starting to show some development and should drink well for twenty years.  It is very food friendly and would be great with Thai food.

Purple in color with a rubby rim, opaque and bright.  The nose has cassis, slight black cherry, a bit of new leather, earth and spice.  Full bodied.  Full tannins.  Good balance.  On the palate, this is not a monster cab but there is plenty of fruit.  Flavors of cassis and black cherries with spice and char.  This has depth and should age well.  Good finish.  Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.  It is very nice on its own but probably a bit better with food.  It would be a nice pairing with a roasted brisket.

Purple in color, opaque and bright.  The nose is nice with black cherries, slight bramble, char and slight spice.  Medium bodied.  Medium tannins.  On the palate, this is nicely balanced with good acidity.  Flavors of  black cherries, with spice and char.  Good finish.  This is drinking well but will age nicely over the next ten years.  It is excellent on its own and will work well with many foods. It went very well with vegetarian Indian food (moderately spicy).

This is made from the Aglianico grape in the arch of the boot in Italy.  Purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright.  The nose is deep with black cherries, plums, spice, char and slight anise.  Full bodied.  Medium tannins.  Well balance.  Nice texture.  On the palate, this is tasty with black cherries and plums over some spice and smoke.  Long finish.  This is great on its own and will work very well with most foods (not seafood).  It went great with a Margherita Pizza.  Drink over the next eight to fifteen years.

Purchased as a 375ml at the winery in 2022.  Golden in color, clear and bright.  The nose is great with apricots, yeast, and slight minerality.  Viscous texture.  Good acidity.  On the palate, this is sweet, not cloying and delicious.  Flavors of apricots with a slight sweet lime note.  Long finish.  A little goes a long way.  This is delicious on its own but has the acidity to work with a dessert.  Stay away from chocolate but a fruit based cake would work well.  Drink over the next twenty years.

2018 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

Vintage:

Score:

Grade:

Current Price:

This is a very nice Barolo that is reasonably priced.  Light ruby in color, clear and bright.  The nose has cherries, some sour cherries, char and spice.  Medium bodied.  Medium tannins.  Good acidity.  On the palate, this has some depth.  It seems to be drinking well now though and about at peak.  Flavors of cherries with some spice and char.  It really needs food to show its best (what a shock for a Barolo).  Good finish.  This will be great with braised meats but also a nice mushroom pizza.  Drink over the next eight to twelve years.
