The name is legendary. Mondavi. Therefore you expect something terrific when you open the bottle, and this does not disappoint. The wine opens with mature dark fruit of blackberry, black cherry, huckleberry, boysenberry and plum with tight and dusty tannin and good acidity. This needs some time to open up and accounting for at least 30 minutes would be a good idea. It’s definitely balanced between the oak program and the fruit, something Robert Mondavi no doubt would be proud of.

You may know the Symington family from the wide number of Port wine they produce, but they’ve also excelled at producing still red and white wines for years. Their latest venture, this delicate little wine, is worth looking into. A blend of traditional Port grapes, including Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca, this offers blackberry, blueberry, huckleberry, black cherry with soft notes of strawberry, cocoa, and plum. The wine offers a terrific acidity and being unoaked, it still has a depth of character that many unoaked wines do not.

Though Banshee is probably better known for their still wines, they also produce a non vintage sparkler. Comprised of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier this delightful sparkling wine offers light notes of lemon lime, citrus zest, Asian pear, white peach, red delicious apple, and honeysuckle. It has a solid acidity and mild carbonation to make this fun and interesting. It was aged on the less for 24 months, and consistent to Banshee’s original mission statement, this wine definitely over delivers for the price.

Alte Reben translates to Old Vines.  Tasted at the winery.  Yellow/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is nice with limes and minerality.  Slightly oily texture which is nice.  On the palate, this is complex and deep and quite concentrated.  Flavors of limes with underlying minerality.  Good acidity.  Long finish.  This is great on its own and will be better with food.  This would be great with Vietnamese Pho.  Drink over the next eight to twelve years.

Tasted at the winery.  Green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is interesting with green apples and light smoky notes.  Nice viscous texture.  Light but persistent tannins.  Medium bodied.  On the palate, green apples and white pepper.  Someone mentioned Mirabelle plums but I am not sure what those are.  This is drinking quite well now and should continue for another eight to twelve more.  Great on its own, this will work quite well with pasta primavera.

Tasted at the winery.  Green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose has a really nice minerality with a bit of white pepper and slight lime.  Soft texture but still crisp.  On the palate, minerals with slight asparagus notes.  Lemons on the finish.  Good acidity.  This drinks easy and nicely right now and should probably be consumed in the next three to five years.  It will work well with fried foods.

Tasted at the winery where it was referred to as Sekt (although not on the label).  It is made from 100% Zweigelt.  Salmon/orange in color, clear and bright.  A steady stream of medium bubbles.  The nose is nice with orange rind notes and some minerality.  It seems basically dry.  On the palate, nice cherry notes.  Good acidity.  It turns slightly bitter with cough drop notes on the finish.  Very refreshing.  Drinks nicely on its own but would be better with food.  Of course, Schnitzel would be a great match.  Drink over the next couple of years.

One of the best Sauvignon Blancs I have ever had!  Tasted at the Nigl Winery Restaurant.  Light golden/green in color, clear and bright.  The nose is great with Mango, pineapple, green pepper and slight lemon notes along with some minerality.  Great creamy texture, yet, also crisp acidity.  On the palate, this is delicious.  Mango, pineapple and slight herbal note with underlying minerality.  Long finish.  This is drinking beautifully and should drink well for another seven to ten years.  Great on its own, it was perfect with a mushroom pasta.

Purchased at Interspar for Ten Euros.  12.5% abv.  Green/gold in color, clear and bright.  The nose is interesting with Linden leaves, gooseberry, and herbal notes.  Medium bodied.  On the palate, the gooseberry comes thru along with a bit of yellow grapefruit and some lemon.  Good acidity.  Nice finish.  This is a really nice value.  Drink over the next few years.  Very nice on its own, this will work well with lighter foods.  Great with fried appetizers.

Purchased at the local grocery store in Krems, Austria for around $10.  Light golden in color, clear and bright.  The nose is nice with a bit of hay, some lemon/lime and slight tropical fruits.  Light bodied.  Easy to drink.  Moderate acidity.  On the palate, there is some papaya and some lime.  Moderate finish.  This drinks well on its own and will work well with lighter foods.  Drink over the next few years.
