Background:  Launched in 2000 by Francesco Siclari, Feudi della Medusa is one of Sardinia’s preeminent wineries. Located on the southern portion of the island, the estate enjoys a climate that is typically Mediterranean arid in the summer, rainy in the winter and windy, always windy. The soils are rocky, volcanic and well draining, perfect for fine wine grapes. In addition to international varieties, Feudi della Medusa also makes wines from indigenous vines including Cannonau, a highly aromatic, ancient relative of Grenache.

Wine Notes: A very brilliant garnet red in color with a bouquet of cherry and mint, this wine has a long and pungent flavor. Food pairing suggestions include: Baked pork, roasted boar and red meats; baked partridge and pheasant; cheeses: parmesan and Sardinian pecorino; cured cold meats and salami.

As the weather starts to warm up, I find myself looking to shed those heavy red wines and foods of winter. In particular, white wines that are both refreshing and interesting are on my mind. Italy has many great white wines, some of which have been discussed here before . Vermentino is made around the Mediterranean from Spain to Italy. It is even made in California. But for me, the top Vermentinos in the world come from Sardinia. Off the Western coast of Italy, in the Mediterranean, lays the island of Sardegna (what we call Sardinia). The island has an ancient history, being controlled by the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Catalans.
