Mayo Family Winery Reserve Room (Kenwood)

The Vibe:

The Mayo Family Reserve Room (there is also one in Healdsburg) is the food and wine pairing sister to the main Mayo Family Winery tasting room in Glen Ellen. At the Kenwood Reserve Room, it's all about food and wine pairing and Mayo does it very well. Approximately seven different wines are paired with small samples of food, expertly prepared by an in-house chef.

It's highly recommended to call ahead for reservations. Mayo accepts walk-ins but you run the chance of a long wait depending on the timing. Much better to call ahead and go tasting for an hour or so prior to your appointment. Groups of ten or more should definately make reservations as the tasting room is small.

Particularly good if you are seeking:
  • Simply a great place for a casual food and wine pairing experieince.
Not good for:
  • Large groups.
  • Anything other than a great food and wine pairing experience. Though note that the food portions are taste size bites so this is by no means going to serve as a meal.

Kenwood Vineyards

The Vibe:
Kenwood has an old -but nicely refurbished- barn-like feel to it. Professional yet cozy, Kenwood is a great place for any collector of wine labels as their Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon focuses on contemporary artist created wine labels.
Particularly good if you are seeking:
  • Good Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Chardonnay.
  • "Cuvée" style wines.
  • Cool, unique or interesting wine labels. The Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon uniquely blends art and wine.
  • A place that can handle large groups. Kenwood's tasting room is sizable so your tasting entourage can likely be accomodated.
Not good for:
  • Large group event hosting such as a wedding or corporate event.
  • People seeking grand architecture or magnificent gardens. Kenwood is well kept and nice, but not spectacular.
  • Picnics. Though Kenwood has picnic facilities, this isn't the place to plan a destination picnic.

Sauvignon Blanc, Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay

Big Tobacco. Big Oil. Big Wine???

Anyone who has tried to buy wine over the internet may be well aware of the obstacle course of wine shipping laws tripping up oenophiles all over the U.S. today.

Unless you are fortunate enough to live in what is referred to as a “reciprocal” state, it may quite literally take an act of congress for you to buy a bottle of that great boutique wine you tried during your wine country vacation last year.

Journey de la Montanya

A pickup party is one of the standard perks of wine club membership. Usually 3 or 4 times a year, club members who live close enough by, or who happen to be visiting the area, pick up the newly released club selections on a special day at the winery. Lots of wine is poured (of course) with complementary foods, often a barbecue, and sometimes, live music. It was all of these at the club pickup party we visited at De La Montanya Winery & Vineyards.

Restaurant Wine Lists: What is America Drinking?

IntoWine recently sat down with Charles Gill, CEO of WineMetrics, to discuss what is an impressive feat to anyone who loves wine, analytics, or both. WineMetrics has assembled an enormous and comprehensive database aggregating the wine lists ofrom restaurants across the US. The resulting data is useful to restaurants and of course wine distributors and producers looking for outlets to sell their wines. To the pedestrian wine drinker, the findings are simply fascinating.

WineMetrics has compiled extensive data detailing the wines that occupy wine lists in restaurants across the nation, from the Olive Garden in Dayton, Ohio to the local French bistro in Lower Manhattan. Acquiring this data must have been a laborious process. How did you go about it?

Much of it is acquired by our distributor clients but a great many restaurants feature their wine lists on their websites, which we utilize. Often we just contact the account and ask for it.

What surprised you as you started assessing the data?

Chateau Ste. Michelle Winemaker Bob Bertheau Talks Washington Wine

Chateau Ste. Michelle is one of the largest and most revered wineries in America. Located in Washington's Columbia Valley, Chateau Ste. Michelle is often -and mistakenly- overlooked by oenophiles searching for fine American wine. It isn't often that one gets to "talk shop" with the winemaker from a winery of the caliber of Chateau Ste. Michelle -they tend to be awfully busy people after all- but IntoWine.com had the good fortune of being able to do just that. What follows is our chat with Chateau Ste. Michelle Winemaker Bob Bertheau.

Robert Mondavi & the Mondavi Family: American Wine Royalty

When talk turns to Napa Valley royalty, Robert Mondavi and the Mondavi family indisputably qualify as the ruling monarchy of the Napa Valley –and frankly the US- wine industry. With an almost biblical or Shakespearean flair, the Mondavi family story of the last 100 years is one of passion, pettiness, family squabbling, wild success, dramatic failure, and of course, wine. In her new book, The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty, author Julia Flynn delivers a masterful narrative on the Mondavi clan. IntoWine.com recently had the privilege of chatting with Julia about the book and the evolution of the Mondavi family story.

Keeping it in the Family: Andrew Nalle Philosophizes About Life as a Family Winemaker

The first thing I notice about Nalle Winery in Healdsburg is the row of gnarled, thick stumped Zinfandel vines lining the pathway up to the large red barn where the Nalle family makes their wine. The vines look much older than many of the other grapevines I’ve seen planted in wineries nearby, and indeed they are. These vines, planted in 1927 by Andrew Nalle’s great grandfather attest to the long lineage, hard work and love for the earth that characterizes the wines of Nalle Winery. At age 29, Andrew Nalle is working closely with his father Doug to keep the tradition alive.

Beaujolais, Georges Duboeuf and the Evolution of Nouveau: Rudolph Chelminski Discusses His New Book

Each year at 12:01 AM on the third Thursday of November, millions of bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau begin a journey from a little French village to locales across the globe. Wine stores and cafes enthusiastically greet these shipments with signs and banners proclaiming "Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!" "The New Beaujolais has arrived!". With this begins the annual celebration of the arrival of the French wine Beaujolais Nouveau, a celebration steeped in tradition, frivolity, grandeur, legend, and of course, fabulous wine.

Cheap Wine vs. Expensive Wine: Isn’t It All Just Grape Juice?

I enjoy talking wine with anyone and everyone, and as a result, have some interesting and provoking questions posed by casual wine drinkers. Beyond the varietals, regions, styles, labels and terminology is a very fundamental question asked over and over again. Why is some good wine cheap while the small lot stuff is so damn expensive? Isn't it all just fermented grapes? Is there really a perceivable qualitative difference tied to the price tag?
