California born, living in Portland, Oregon with partner of 9 years, 1 dog and 3 cats (which is, at times, 4 too many). I have been in the hospitality industry for most of my adult life, in restaurants, catering, hotel operations, and wine sales. Currently working on my ISG and Master Court certifications. Way too much information to absorb, but the field research is a lot of fun.
What I Think
A fair restaurant corkage fee is:
My wine travels have taken me to the following wine regions:
Washigton: Walla Walla, Prosser, Yakima Valley Columbia Gorge, Woodinville, Tri-Cities
Oregon: Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge, Roseburg
California: Napa, Sonoma, Amador County, Paso Robles
Canada: Okanagan Valley
What I think of the movie Sideways:
Loved the fact that while Miles berates merlot, he raves about Petrus.
Other than that, it was silly to see pinot prices spike (particulaly here in Oregon) and watch people claim they hate merlot
My "wish list" of wines I want to acquire soon:
2005 Vieux Donjon Chateauneuf du Pape
2005 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape
Any Heitz cellars Marta's Vineyard Cabs
Chapoutier Hermitages
Any Chapoutier for that matter
My biggest wine pet peeve:
Cult wine that thrives on its name, rather than what's in the bottle.
A tell-tale sign of a wine snob is:
Anyone who thinks Yellowtail is bad wine.
The wine region I most want to visit:
Tuscany - going next year!! Bravissimo!!
The people with whom I most often enjoy wine:
The best wines I have ever tasted:
1970 Leoville-Poyfere
1985 Bollinger RD
1997 Banfi Brunello di Montalcino
1989 Stag's Leap Chardonnay
1985 Olivier Leflaive Puligny Montrachet
My dream wine to one day taste or own:
Petrus
Screaming Eagle (I know, it's a cult wine, but I want to see what all the fuss is about)
Chateau Ausone
Moulin Touchais
My favorite wine quote:
"There are two kinds of wine in this world, and only two kinds: the kind you like and the kind you don't" - John Parducci (attributed)
The last wine I had that I absolutely loved:
Jonesy tawny port - non vintage.
While a non-vintage tawny, average age is reportedly near 50 years. Absolutely stunning. Great flavor, nice acidity to balance the sugar. And less than $15.
My thoughts on the 100 point rating scale made famous by Robert Parker and emulated by seemingly everyone:
Ridiculous. Wine is an intensely subjective thing. What one person likes may be repulsive to another. Parker's 100 point scale ensures that winemakers who care about scores will make wines that Parker likes, not wines they think are the best themselves. I buy wine I like, not what Parker likes.
Wine Cellar
No wines in this cellar yet.
